Touch of Sugar: Shane Mosley Believes Jake Paul Can Be World Champion
Shane Mosley, Paul’s new co-trainer, said: “We’re trying to make Jake someone who can challenge for the world title or win the cruiser class title one day. “But he needs to learn the right things, because he starts late, like Deontay Wilder. He’s a sportsman but we need to train him to be a top boxer. He needs to beat Tommy [Fury] first, but that’s the way we want to go. I want him to really understand what’s happening in the ring.
Mosley believes Paul was unwell the night he lost to Fury and that a rematch would set a record. “He learns very quickly and goes head-to-head with experienced players,” Mosley said. “But I think he missed the middle part of his development. So that’s what we’re working on. I come to help. I’m not a head coach but a legendary coach who knows many different things because I’ve been there, witnessed it and done it.
“Tommy threw a lot of unusual punches and Jake wasn’t ready for the amateur style Tommy had. Yes, Tommy ordered range, but that further left Jake with no idea how to reach him, such as cutting off the ring. There are different types of moves he can make to attract him and to counter him that he hasn’t used yet, so we’ll teach him different things. So when he fights this kind of fighting again, that mistake won’t happen again, where he’s stuck and doesn’t know what to do. I want him to know everything so he knows what to do.
“He will avenge his defeat against Fury. Right now he’s just inexperienced, that’s all. He will win if he rematches him next. He’s in good hands. With me and the whole team. I believe he will improve very quickly.”
