Toyota HiLux GR Sport 2023 launched in Australia

Toyota overnight revealed the stiffer and more powerful-looking flagship HiLux, which will debut here this year.

The Toyota HiLux GR Sport features what the brand calls a Dakar-inspired design and will be the most powerful diesel HiLux it has ever offered locally.

The company says it expects the two-cabin GR Sport to appear in the second half of 2023. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but will almost certainly be higher than the $70,200 pre-road sticker mark of the current Rogue flagship model.

GR Sport continues to use a 2.8 liter 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine like most HiLux model, but with a 10 percent increase in power and torque to 165kW (@3000rpm) and 550Nm (@2800rpm), respectively.

Toyota says the extra growl is due to revised turbocharger and fuel injection control.

The six-speed automatic transmission has also been tuned sportier and the locking area has been enlarged. Paddle shifters are standard.

Suspension modifications include redesigned wishbones, stiffer coil springs and reinforced rear axle, with monotube shock absorbers said to provide higher damping force and better heat dissipation.

Toyota promises a sportier setup and reduced roll angle without compromising comfort in everyday driving.

Like the Rogue, there are rear ventilated disc brakes. They use a single-cylinder floating clamp, while the front discs have a four-cylinder fixed caliper.

Visually, the GR Sport is distinguished from smaller models by the satin black fenders surrounding the front bumper.

There is a stronger front end with a vertical mesh grille with the Toyota logo.

Approach and departure angles are 30 and 26 degrees, respectively, compared to 31 and 23 degrees for the Rogue.

Toyota promises a higher ground clearance figure for the GR Sport, but doesn’t say what that is. For reference, the Rogue has a ground clearance of 265 mm.

The GR Sport rides on 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires and features red skid plates, rock rails and rear rebound points.

Inside, the black interior has some contrast: bright sport pedals, red seat belts and GR logos on the steering wheel and headrests; The GR logo also appears on the exterior, including on the red brake calipers.

Toyota Australia says it is a “global center of excellence for Toyota 4WD vehicles” and that its engineers are “instrumental” in the development programme, working alongside colleagues from Japan, Thailand and Latin America.

Like the Rogue, while the GR Sport will be produced alongside other HiLux models in Thailand, some finishing touches can be added at Toyota’s facility in Altona, Victoria.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchising, said: “The HiLux GR Sport builds on the spirit of Toyota’s success in Dakar as a powerful all-wheel drive vehicle that will appeal to a wide range of customers. customers looking for the quintessential off-road version of Australia’s best-selling car. work.

“Thanks to the extensive involvement of our local designers and engineers, the HiLux GR Sport is an exciting driving vehicle that will bring new possibilities and excitement to the adventurous lifestyles of our guests. Australian goods.”

Somewhat confusingly, this isn’t the only HiLux GR Sport available though it’s the only one to arrive here.

Toyota has revealed different GR Sport variants for Japan, Thailand, Europe and South Africa, though only the last water get a more powerful diesel engine – if not for the more aggressive styling of the car that comes here.

The new GR Sport will give Toyota a more direct rival to the Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warriors, though with its unique twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, the Ford Ranger Raptor has taken the game into this space.

While the GR Sport will be the most powerful diesel HiLux sold by Toyota in Australia, it won’t be the most powerful overall.

The 2008-09 short-lived TRD HiLux has a 4.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine that produces less torque (453Nm) but significantly more power (225kW).
