If you are anything Like me, you’re probably not used to smoking nearly 50 pounds of pork shoulder perfectly with your smartphone while lying in bed. But there I was with the new Traeger Timberline, hitting the “super smoke” button and checking my temperature at 6 a.m. before my morning latte, making enough meat to feed 100 people at the annual barreler. in my town.
I don’t just cook huge amounts of pork on fresh Traeger’s Redesigned premium smoker. In fact, this summer, I rarely cook anything that isn’t smoked in some way. Chicken salad? Smoke that chicken first. Steak? Smoke it before you look for it on the built-in induction burner. A juicy melon? Toss it on Traeger for 30 minutes to reach a desert of perfect caramel.

Minus a moderate Wi-Fi connection (you’ll want to secure your yard have solid coverage), the new Timberline offers everything I want from a modern smoker and more: You can bake, saute and smoke in a single appliance that saves energy and fuel. A new rig
The Timberline comes in a large orange box with clear instructions for setting up, but you may want a partner to help you move some of the heavier bits. The centerpiece of the system is a sizable insulated smoke box with room for six pork shoulder pieces, or roughly the equivalent of ribs or chicken (the also sell an XL . version with about a third more space for an extra $300). Inside the smoke box, there are three tiers where you can put everything, with a vent for the smoke cut in the middle along the back of the smoker so it circulates completely to the top before exiting.
There is a drip tray and ash/grease tray in an easily removable compartment in the cabinet below the smoker, which is also a great place to store filler pellets and the metal liner for the drip tray. Next to the smoke box, on the right side of the device, you will find a box where you can pour the pellets of your choice (Traeger sent me one of their in-house made pellets, but you can may use other trademarks). There’s even a special plastic bin and trap door so you can drop one pellet out of the drill for storage and put another in if you want to smoke something, such as hickory wood, before transferring. back to apple wood.
The Timberline’s main control area is located on the right side of the unit via a very comfortable button and color LCD display. The best way to use it is to connect your phone to the oven via the Traeger app. Once you’ve connected it to Wi-Fi, you can control every aspect of it (including timer settings and temperature alerts) from your smartphone. It’s quite convenient. You just want to make sure your router has enough range because I’ve experienced erratic connections on Traeger now and then.
