Bill Nader was appointed President and CEO of Thoroughbred Owners of California in June. He worked as a senior executive at the Hong Kong Jockey Club from 2007 until then, and was previously Senior Vice President and CEO of the Racing Association. New York. He began his career at Rockingham Park in his hometown of Salem, New Hampshire in 1979.
The most exciting race you’ve seen this year isn’t Flightline?
G2 Hong Kong Mile on November 20 when the Golden Sixty ran down the California Spangle with a quarter ending of 21.32. I watched it on TV so not sure if it counts.
One positive change you would like to see in the race in 2023?
Positive communication from people who like sports. Important words. If you love it and you know it, then your words will surely show it.
If you could bring back one track from the past, which one would it be?
Rockingham Park, my hometown racetrack. Honorable mentions to Arlington and Hialeah.
Who is the best operator in racing right now?
I. If I tell anyone else, I put myself at unnecessary risk.
If you could have dinner with one historical figure, who would it be?
Martin Luther King
Best advice you’ve ever received?
My mother – “Just be yourself.”
What will racing look like in 10 years?
The Japanese horses will be a big part of the picture in the great Class I classics for three-year-olds on earth. Sports betting will be available at most racecourses. Popular racetracks will continue to thrive.
Do we need more music or less music?
Less than.
Favorite horse of all time (and why)?
Spectacular bid, for what he achieved after losing to Triple Crown. His four-year-old season was incredible.
Best race you’ve ever seen?
Belmont Stakes in 1998 when Victory Gallop turned down Real Silent a Triple Crown. It’s an absolute horror movie.
