Ukraine’s governor says Russia is preparing for a major attack in the east
Kyiv, Ukraine:
Local Governor Sergiy Gaiday said on Telegram on Monday that the Russian military is preparing for a major offensive in the Lugansk region, eastern Ukraine.
“We see that equipment is coming from different directions, they are carrying manpower, they are carrying fuel,” Gaiday said in a video statement.
He added: “We understand that they are preparing for a major breakthrough on a full scale.
Gaiday urged residents to leave the area as soon as possible.
“Please don’t wait for your house to be bombed,” he said in a separate video.
“Don’t hesitate,” he added, specifying that 1,000 people had been evacuated on Monday.
A senior Pentagon official said Russia has removed about two-thirds of the troops it had around Kyiv, who were mainly sent back to Belarus with plans to redeploy elsewhere in Ukraine.
