Unreal video gives us a glimpse of futuristic graphics
Epic Games held a small showcase at its Game Developers Conference earlier today, called State of Unreal. Designed as a way to keep all the people work for game updated on what’s coming for Unreal Engine which is dominating the industry, highlights are also obviously interesting for anyone drama game is good.
Both Epic and several outside studios took the opportunity to showcase some of the stuff they’re working on in Unreal Engine 5. The shortest and perhaps most impressive video is this one from Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Story: Hellblade IIhighlights some amazing face animation capabilities (using Metahuman, that we wrote about before):
It still doesn’t look realitythere’s something about the exaggeration of her lips and teeth that I can’t fully explain, but it still seems Great.
Another topic of technical introduction used to be Action role-playing Lord of the Fallenwith a more conventional view of how games are made with the engine:
Followed by this game demo from infinitea game of bugs in the backyardI’m pretty sure that was first published year before, but still in development. This clip is a bit more developer-focused, but still gives you a look at how Unreal Engine 5 handles the scale of a large open world:
And finally, we’ve got this driving video, which is not just an advertisement for the Unreal Engine and Epic’s Quixel, but also for the EV company Rivian (their car dashboards run on the Unreal Engine). This one shows off some lovely foliage, along with some impressive driving physics (it’s especially apparent in how the car hits small rocks and then flies away):
While everything presented at these presentations is deemed distrustful, it is encouraging that three out of four video is here are actual games currently in development, which means the usual “ah, your actual game won’t look this good” warnings that we often need on these posts rather as needed here.
