US diplomat Anne Sacoolas’ wife faces trial after Harry Dunn’s death
London:
The wife of an American diplomat will face criminal proceedings in the UK, accused of causing the death by dangerous driving of a teenager, Thailand’s Public Prosecution Service said on Monday. .
Harry Dunn, 19, died in August 2019 when his motorcycle collided with a car that was driving on the wrong side of the road near a US air base in the south of England.
Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a US technical assistant at the base, left the country shortly after and claimed diplomatic immunity.
The case will be heard at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 18, a spokesman for CPS, which brings prosecutions in England and Wales, told AFP.
“While the challenges and complexities of this case are well known, we remain committed to ensuring justice in this matter.”
British media said Sacoolas was expected to appear via video link from the US but CPS declined to comment.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss tweeted: “Welcome news Anne Sacoolas will face a UK court. We continue to support the family to get justice for Harry Dunn.”
The issue of whether Sacoolas should be granted diplomatic immunity or should be extradited and brought to trial has cemented Britain’s relationship with the United States since the deadly crash.
Dunn’s mother Charlotte Charles said she and her family were “very emotional and overwhelmed” by the development.
“That’s all we asked for after Harry’s death,” she said.
In June, then-British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the US would not object to a remote trial.
