Volkswagen is building a new factory in Wolfsburg, Germany to produce the upcoming Trinity electric flagship.
Plant construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2023 (March-June 2023) and Volkswagen is investing €2 billion (2.94 billion Australian dollars) to make it all happen.
The German automaker is aiming to get its Trinity model off the production line by 2026. At this point, Volkswagen is aiming to produce one Trinity every 10 hours.
Volkswagen says it will achieve these goals with fewer components, more automation, leaner production lines and new logistics concepts. It will also offer a limited number of Trinity variants to reduce manufacturing complexity.
The new plant will be located near Volkswagen’s existing Wolfsburg plant, and operations carried out there will gradually shift to other company plants.
“The Supervisory Board’s decision is an important milestone for the transformation of the brand and the future of the Wolfsburg production facility,” said Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter.
“We are setting standards in the automotive industry with Trinity and the new plant, and making Wolfsburg a global beacon of advanced and efficient vehicle manufacturing.”
Volkswagen said it considered building the Trinity at its existing Wolfsburg plant but decided it would be better in the long run to create an entirely new plant.
Volkswagen has so far released a single teaser image of the Trinity.
The rendering is very underexposed and exhibits low fast-forward silhouettes.
At the rear of the Trinity, it seems to have a rear spoiler and rear door somewhat reminiscent of Skoda Enyaq Coupe iV intersection.
As detailed previously, Trinity will be Volkswagen’s flagship electric product and the company claims it will be net carbon neutral.
Set to be the first car built on Volkswagen Group Scalable System Platform (SSP)The Trinity will have an electric range of more than 700 km, “shorter charging times” and offer Level 4 autonomous driving.
During the lifetime of the SSP architecture, Volkswagen is expecting to produce “more than 40 million vehicles” on this electric platform.
This will be the successor of not only today’s MEB and PPE all-electric architecture, but also the MQB, MSB and MLB architectures currently used for internal combustion engine vehicles.
That means it will be highly scalable, with models on those existing architectures ranging in size from light hatchbacks (based on the MQB Volkswagen Polo) to full-size luxury sedans (based on MSB Bentley Flying Spark).
The Volkswagen Group is also investing 800 million euros ($1.17 billion) in creating “the most advanced research and development (R&D) center in Europe” where it will design the core of the vehicle. its architecture and modules.
