Volodymyr Zelensky claims Ukraine has recaptured 6,000 square kilometers of territory from Russia
Kyiv:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday said Ukrainian forces had recaptured 6,000 square kilometers (2,320 square miles) of territory from Russia in a counterattack this month.
“Since the beginning of September, our soldiers have liberated 6,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in the east and south, and we are going further,” Zelensky said in his daily speech.
Ukraine declared a resounding success in a flash counterattack in the Kharkiv region in the northeast, where dozens of areas, including the cities of Izyum, Kupiansk and Balakliya, were recaptured.
It has also made significant gains in the southern Kherson region, where the Ukrainian military said earlier on Monday that it had recaptured 500 square kilometers.
The US-based Institute for the Study of War said that “Ukraine has turned the tide in its favor, but the current counter-offensive will not end the war”.
