WBC split = 80/20 for Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte Boxing News 24
Via Charles Brun: The WBC has revealed that the split for Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte will be 80/20 in favor of the Fury champion on Thursday. If no agreement is reached during the negotiations, a tender for the wallet will take place on January 11.
There isn’t much time left for Fury and Whyte’s promoters to strike a deal before the January 11 bid, and it would be surprising if they put a lot of effort into it.
However, it’s still not possible to assume Fury-Whyte will play out, because Fury’s management could choose to let him have an easier fight. Given Fury’s popularity, he doesn’t need the WBC title because it would slow him down.
Fury wants to fight rematch winner Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk 2 because he can make TONS of money playing against either of those two.
Dillian stuck with 20%
Whyte was hoping for a 55/45 split. This is clearly Breaking news for Team Whyte because the split he’s getting is nowhere near what he and his promoter Eddie Hearn are calling for. There will be a lot of crocodile tears for Whyte and Hearn about the WBC coming to an 80/20 split, but they don’t have to agree if they don’t want to.
In other words, they can go ahead and line up to try to fight IBF/WBA/WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Supposedly it could take 3 to 4 years 34-year-old Whyte before he is locked up as a must for one of the other belts, but he will get there as long as he keeps winning and doesn’t do something silly like turn down someone who removes a title AGAIN.
The Daily Star reported on the WBC’s split decision, but it has yet to be confirmed by Team Fury, Whyte and the World Boxing Council.
If this turns out to be true what is being reported, Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs) and his promoters at Matchroom Boxing probably won’t be too happy about this split as it’s far from compared to the 45% they had hoped to come.
Will Team Whyte fight?
Whether Whyte and his promoter Eddie Hearn will accept the offer or walk away remains to be seen. It’s worth it for Whyte to join the fight if he believes he can beat Fury.
Even if it’s a far cry from the 45% they wanted, if Whyte beat Fury he would be the new WBC champion and he could use the title to face the winner in a rematch Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua.
The only way to make Whyte and Matchroom negative is that they don’t believe they are capable of defeating Fury. If they think they can win, it’s not a big deal that they have to take the small amount this time as it will only be a one-time thing.
Once Whyte has the WBC title, he could make a lot of money going up against winner Joshua vs. Usyk 2, and get a bigger share in a potential rematch with Fury.
Fury may vacate his WBC title
However, we don’t know if Team Fury will fight Whyte, as Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has said that Tyson will fight in March and NOT defend his WBC title.
Arum says Fury will defend his Ring Magazine title against Andy Ruiz Jr. or the next Robert Helenius.
It’s unclear if Arum will go ahead with that idea or if he’ll let Fury drop the idea and go on to defend the WBC belt against Whyte.
Fighting Whyte is an extra round that Fury will need to get through for him to get the fight he wants against winner Joshua vs. Uysk. It may not be worth it for Fury to enter the fight against Whyte when he has a lot of money in the face of winner Joshua-Usyk 2.
