LONDON (Reuters) – The founder of ikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has been denied permission to appeal in Britain’s Supreme Court against a decision to extradite him to the United States, a court said on Monday.

While Assange’s extradition is still subject to government approval, Monday’s decision deals a blow to Assange’s efforts to fight his expulsion from Britain in court.

US authorities want Australian, 50-year-old Assange, to face 18 charges related to WikiLeaks’ release of a series of secret US military files and diplomatic cables they gave away. was to put their lives in jeopardy.

In December, the High Court in London overturned a lower court ruling that he should not be extradited because his mental health problems meant he would be at risk of suicide. and on Monday, the Supreme Court itself said it would not hear a word of challenge to that ruling. .

A spokesman for the Supreme Court said: “The application was rejected by the High Court and the reason given was that the application did not raise a contested legal position.

The extradition decision will now need to be approved by Interior Minister Priti Patel, after which Assange can challenge the decision by review by the judiciary. Judicial review involves a judge reviewing the legitimacy of a decision by a public authority.

A spokesman for the Home Office said it would not be appropriate to comment on the court’s decision.

The Supreme Court has accepted a package of guarantees offered by the United States, which includes that Assange will not be held in the so-called “ADX” maximum security prison in Colorado and that he can be transferred to Australia. to execute the sentence if convicted.

Assange’s lawyers said the decision to extradite Assange based on those commitments was “very disturbing.”

Assange’s lawyers said: “We regret that we did not have the opportunity to consider the troubling circumstances in which the Requesting States could provide prior assurances after the conclusion of the hearing. sufficient evidence,” Assange’s lawyer said in a statement on Monday.
