Williams removes Ayrton Senna logo from cars in 2022
Williams has removed the Ayrton Senna logo from its 2022 car, citing a desire to move forward and escape the past.
The team has paid homage to Senna in its cars since the three-time world champion was killed in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix while driving a Williams car.
The emblem has traditionally taken the form of the Senna “S” emblem, although in 2014 the team wore the “Senna Semper” badge to mark the 20th anniversary of his death.
Williams has launched his car for the upcoming season under the title “a fresh start.”
The team has opened up a new dimension of Senna’s legacy at its museum, however, team director Jost Capito says it’s time for a fresh start.
“The decision was that we wanted to move into the future,” said Capito.
“We have a new era, we have a new car. We have also refurbished our museum, where we have a special area to celebrate Ayrton. Think we have to. look into the future and don’t show the ‘S’ to drivers every time they get in the car and be reminded of what happened.
“I think it’s time for the team to move on and be very honored to Senna and have a very personal space in the museum and honor him there.”
Team Williams has undergone radical changes over the past two years.
The Williams family relinquishes control of the team the following September 2020 sold to Dorilton Capital. Group founder Frank Williams passed away in November last year.
Williams’ launch is for entertainment purposes only, although the team was running its 2022 car at a Silverstone rally yard on Tuesday afternoon.
