Yoko Taro could, could be done with Nier
Yoko Taro is known to be the mastermind behind the Nier series (and its predecessor, Drakenguard) although he may have put the latter before himself. The eccentric game director with the monstrous mask teased that he put Nier behind his back as well.
In a recorded holiday message on December 22, Taro, along with producer Nier Yosuke Saito and series composer Keiichi Okabe, discussed last year as well as the sales success of the series. Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 (according to the team has passed a million copies). The update began as a friendly conversation between old friends, as they discussed traveling abroad to meet fans, wanting them to spend Christmas, and complaining about problems with shoulder.
But when Saito asked Taro if he had anything new to share about the Nier series, Taro bluntly replied “No, nothing!” When Saito asked if he was okay with not doing anything more with YoRHa, Taro half-jokingly declared, “We made an announcement here today guys! The Nier series is now complete! You can watch the video by clicking on the embedded tweet below.
Of course, Taro could easily joke and Saito immediately called him about it. Taro admits giving up on Nier might have been a lie, saying “But…you never know…I could do more if I got a big pile of money…”
So is Nier made for good? My money is “probably not, but don’t expect anything new for a long time.” Especially if Taro actually gets a bag of cash. In October, Taro released Card voice, a turn-based RPG centered around cards (but not really a deck builder). He’s got some “free time” when he and Nier Replicant are out the door, and we’re curious to see what he’ll do next.
