Rivian

Rivan and Amazon’s adorable electric delivery van—EDV—is hitting the streets, with the first 1000 of the 100,000 planned for production already in the hands of the giant’s drivers ecommerce. We had the opportunity to get up close and personal with EDV at the showroom of Rivian’s Venice, California and were impressed with its novel design and features. Here are 10 things we think make EDV fun, and we hope will make for a better experience for Amazon’s road warriors.

EDV’s cute looks are no coincidence. The Rivian designers wanted it to have a friendly look as it would be a common image in American neighborhoods. Instead of the Rivian logo, the Amazon logo is emblazoned on a mirrored black shield.

EDVs are offered in two lengths, one that carries packages of 500 cubic feet and one that can hold cargo up to 700 cubic feet. The one shown here is the larger EDV700, but the EDV500 is essentially the same truck with a less modular body plate. The entire van is designed to be easily repaired in the event of a breakdown. For example, if your van gets hit from behind, you can easily swap out the rubber bumper for one that’s intact in stock.

High visibility taillights

Speaking of rear damage, the EDV’s bright and unmistakable red taillights extend upwards across the entire truck. Not only does it make the car easier on the eyes, but it also looks sleek and futuristic.

The bright blue that Amazon uses throughout its website is also incorporated into EDV’s design. It’s everywhere from the Prime logo on the side of the car to the trim in the cabin and a large sample of it covers the rear door area. Just inside the back door and the front right door of the truck are thick handles painted the same color. The stripes on the seat and details on the keychain also carry this theme.

Similar to Rivian’s R1T and R1S models, EDV equipped with large touchscreen infotainment and digital gauge display. Amazon’s routing software is loaded in place of Rivian’s usual navigation software, but the rest is quite similar to what you’d find on the brand’s luxury EV trucks. The forward visibility can only be described as panoramic and from this vantage point the driver can see directly what lies ahead of the EDV. The 360-degree camera system also helps improve visibility when moving on the street.

EDV has many features to make a delivery driver’s job easier, including bulkhead doors that automatically close if the driver locks the door. The seat is also very comfortable and can be adjusted for more seating positions than Ram ProMaster truck currently commonly used by Amazon drivers. The driver’s seat is heated and ventilated, and the steering wheel is also heated, all for driver comfort. Rivian also designed the cargo area to house the specialized bins that Amazon uses to perfectly house its packages.

Locking the door is easy when you have the smart key in your pocket. The EDV key has a built-in clip and buttons at the top, making it easy to activate the remote lock feature without having to take the key out of your pocket.

Trainees or delivery maids can sit on this foldable passenger seat. It’s surprisingly comfortable, and its location makes it easy to hop out to transport a package to a customer’s porch. It even has the same Prime blue seat belt as the driver’s side. There’s plenty of leg room for passengers, and a cup holders are built into the ledge at the base of the seats. When it’s not in use – which it won’t happen most of the time – the bottom of the seat flips up and folds neatly out of the aisle.

All EDV models come with a built-in first aid kit underneath the passenger’s extra seat. Its location near the door makes it easy to reach and get supplies if the driver needs bandages or gauze.

Driver Monitoring—But Not What You Think

Being watched by Big Brother while you’re trying to do your job sounds like a nightmare, but Rivian assures us this A-pillar camera system only monitors sleepiness or distract the driver as a safety feature. If it detects that the driver is one of those, it will warn you to pay attention or pull over to take a break. Other driver-assist features on the EDV include lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beam headlights and adaptive cruise control.

We’ve spotted a few EDV700s on the road, like this one senior news editor Joey Capparella found while delivering packages in his New York neighborhood. Rivian says the trucks can travel 150 miles before needing to be recharged, and Amazon warehouses are being fitted with Level 2 charging stations so each can be recharged overnight for zero-emission deliveries. on the next day. EDVs have been designed to last for 10 years or 330,000 miles before needing to be replaced, so when they hit your route you can expect to see them for a long time.
