Clothing deals
Your streetwear may be appropriate for a short afternoon hike near home, but wearing it the wrong way while hiking can quickly make you uncomfortable and even dangerous. Check out our guide to How to layer outdoor clothes, Best base classand The best raincoat for more.
These are my favorite socks. I’ve been trying quite a bit over the past year to make up for two years of pandemic-induced isolation, and I’ve done up to 80 miles of hiking with these on my feet. No complaints here. The secret is that each sock is made of two layers, like two thin socks sewn into one. This allows the inner and outer layers to slide against each other helping to prevent blisters.
The women’s size are being sold for the same price. Think cold weather ahead and save a fortune on my favorite affordable goose down jacket. The price of down jackets has been on the rise lately, but for a little more than the cost of a synthetic jacket at the mall, you can wear a puffy suit. this pinch. It’s warm and well made (I’ve seen three years of regular use and counting). Depending on your size, you can wear it underneath a shell jacket as a middle layer or over all your layers.
The men’s size are selling for the same price. The stone slabs are as hard as a fingernail but relatively light. These aren’t lined with a waterproof material, but that’s what I prefer for all but snowy conditions. Running water and showers are inevitable when hiking, and although waterproof, there’s nothing to stop water from spilling over and into the shoe. In my experience, when shoes are waterproof do When fully wet, they don’t dry quickly. You won’t have that problem here.

It’s made from recycled nylon and features a zip closure (for steam release) and taped seams for extra water protection.
Women’s size Give-N-Go 2.0 Bikini Brief is $13 ($5 off). These Give-N-Go 2.0 briefs can be pricey for underwear, but because of the polyester fabric they take a long time to dry. much faster than cotton or wool. That means less chance of rubbing your feet against the damp fabric. I usually get a couple of years of regular use out of each pair, so you’ll get your money’s worth whether you’re hiking for the day near home or hanging out for a week.

These are the most comfortable deck chairs I’ve ever sat in. Foam padding prevents aches and pains, there’s a buckle that keeps the seat from falling apart during transport, and the backpack straps are integrated into the backrest. Lately, these keep popping up and out of stock. Your best bet for a buffered version is to check in early in the morning; you may get lucky. Split+ is my recommended camping lantern for the reason I recommend it in Best home emergency equipment; it lights up and runs for up to 330 hours (on low setting) with just 3 D-cell batteries. Other lanterns run on up to 8 D-cell batteries (!) or can’t match the Split+’s 425 lumens of brightness. You can also screw the cap to separate the battery from the contacts when storing, which prevents the battery from leaking and damaging.
Weighing in at just under 5 pounds, this model is about a pound heavier than the Half Dome SL 2+ that replaced it, but at this sale price, it’s half the cost. The SL 2+ version is our favorite two-person tent in The Best Tent Guide. The 2020 model is still a great tent, especially if you’re the type of camper who sets up in a designated campground for the weekend.
Inflatable sleeping pads are warmer and less bulky to store than closed-cell foam mattresses. The downside is that they are more expensive and you have to blow them with your mouth when it’s time to camp. Any inflatable pad should be handled with care to prevent tearing, but I haven’t exactly known my NeoAir Xlite for the past four years.
When I decided to cook more authentically during my hiking and camping trips, I looked long and hard at the pans and landed on Jetboil Summit. It has a non-stick ceramic coating, a folding handle and a spatula that snaps into the handle. Iron and steel pans are heavy, if you’re concerned about the weight, while titanium is often thin and leads to hot spots that burn food. Aluminum is the way to go for lightweight camping cookware.
Hiking and climbing deals

The men’s size available for the same price. These are the most comfortable hiking boots at the lowest price on the market, and I recommend that beginners try them out. However, don’t think that once you gain some climbing experience you will outgrow these. The flatter, less aggressive soles allow for more dirt (shoe-to-rock contact) for slippery climbing routes, such as on granite.
The women’s size will also have the same price. I can hang comfortably in the Solution harness all day. OK, maybe not all of but it’s one of the most comfortable and best padded harnesses I’ve used, and given the Black Diamond’s reputation, you know it’s built like a tank. You may need to upgrade something with more laps for climbing, but the Solution has more than enough for any outdoor sport or indoor climbing.
In my humble opinion, the classic belay device is still the best. It has a proven, simple design for slow and climbing climbing partners. I’ve been using mine for multi-day hikes, outdoor rock routes and indoor climbing gyms for four years and counting. There are also Petzl GriGri 2 on sale for $75 ($25 off) if you want a device with brake assist.
Climbing poles can be a serious hiker’s best friend. They relieve stress on the knee during drying and provide stability in rough terrain. The carbon shaft Alpine cork handles are comfortable and firm, even when I held them for 14 hours a day. The FlickLock Pro’s adjusting latches were redesigned not too long ago, and they don’t tend to break like regular plastic-coated FlickLocks. You can attach snow basket ($11) to the poles under dry conditions and rubber head protector ($10) to keep the carbide tips from scratching the rock and damaging the trail.
If you’re hiking in the gray country, you’ll need a bear food container at night so you don’t have to wake up with a pile of bread crumbs spit on by bears. The BV450 easily fits in most overnight packs, and if you’re frugal with your food options, you can store four to five days of food for a hiker. The lid is sturdy yet easy to remove and the inner sides let you see what’s left without having to open it.
