SAN FRANCISCO – As golden empire warriors ended their Western Conference finals series with Dallas Maverickswhile booking tickets back to the NBA Finals, a man named Jason Arasheben started receiving text messages from a few Warriors players.
The text is very simple – and pretentious. “Guaranteed you’ll go crazy with the ring,” read one. “Make sure it’s at the top,” reads another, according to Arasheben, who runs Los Angeles-based jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills.
When the warriors defeat Boston Celtics in six games – Golden State’s fourth title in eight years – Arasheben set out to design a ring that looks like this: big.
The Warriors’ 2022 championship rings were handed out to the team, coaches and office members ahead of Tuesday’s Warriors regular-season opener against the Warriors. Los Angeles Lakers, is 16 carats – a nod to the 16 wins the team has won in the knockout stages. There are 0.91 carats of white diamonds on the inner bezel to honor the team’s 91% home win rate in season after season.
But, like any other championship ring, there is more to the symbolism than just the carat indicator. Designed with a collaborative effort between players, team leadership, and Jason of Beverly Hills, the ring tells the story of the Warriors’ championship season.
“The journey is important,” says Warriors assistant general manager Kirk Lacob, who directed the design process. “It’s the story you’re trying to tell with any ring. The ring itself is cool, it’s flashy. But what it really is, is the physical manifestation of the journey. It has to be a reminder. you about everything you’ve been through.”
Golden State’s title-winning run last year feels reminiscent of its title in 2015 because of its uncertainty. Even after they made it to the Finals, ESPN’s Basketball Strength Index only gave them a 14% chance of winning the title. The Warriors wanted to give a nod to the championship that had begun their reign seven years earlier.
Arasheben and his staff presented Lacob with dozens of innovative designs during their first meeting at Lacob’s office in the Chase Center. But Lacob doesn’t like them. He said he wanted a round shape like their 2015 rings.
And similar to how their 2015 ring resembles the Oracle Arena – with the old building’s recognizable X on the windows around the outside of the ring – this year features an exterior image of the Chase Center in the same. location. Down the side, it’s also possible to look out onto the inside of the Chase Center.
Arasheben and Lacob have only held three formal meetings, but they will send each other numerous updates via text and email throughout the months-long design process. Lacob estimates he saw about 20 versions of the different parts of the ring before deciding on the final design. They start with the side of the ring, and then work on the shins afterwards.
“It’s similar, but it’s a new age,” Lacob said. “It’s bigger, better, and worse.”
The ring is made up of seven carats of yellow diamonds – a rare gem that Jason’s jewelers in Beverly Hills scoured for months to find. Arasheben says the trade embargoes in the aftermath of the war in Ukraine have only made it more challenging, and they source from Belgium, Israel, India and Canada to find enough. By the time the diamonds were purchased, Arasheben and his team had only five weeks to create 65 rings, each requiring between 40 and 50 hours and seven different experts to create.
Yellow is not only an acknowledgment of one of their team’s colors, but also the “Gold Blooded” tagline that the franchise introduced before the first round.
On the face of the ring, a carving of the Bay Bridge is made up of 43 white diamond baguettes – representing Stephen the curryThe 43-point achievement of the 4th game of the 2022 NBA Finals.
The face also features each player’s jersey number on what Lacob calls a “secret hatch that”, when slid out, reveals the number of Larry O’Brien Cups each player has won. The personalized customization feature comes from a desire to honor four core players – Curry, Lacob, said. Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala who built the reign of the Golden State.
“The whole team won this championship together, but we have four very special players,” Lacob said.
One side of each round features the player’s last name, followed by a record of each team’s playoff series wins. On the other hand are seven of the organization’s Larry O’Brien trophies on display.
“I really feel like we won the title last year not despite the two years before that, but because of the two years before that,” Kerr said. “I think about all the work (the boys) put in during those bad years to get better, getting ready for what they faced last year… It’s been a journey. long, but it’s all part of the journey that led to this title, which makes it really special.”
Behind those seven trophies is the ring’s most subtle symbolism – and Lacob’s favorite. It was one of the players who didn’t know it during the design process.
Engraved behind the trophies on the base of the ring is Boston’s legendary parquet floor – the exact spot where the Golden State won these rings.
