No, the last time I issued a new order was to have enough people in our office agree to a kitchen recycling bin. It turns out that clicking “reply all” is an incredible tool for modern democracy, and today’s Bring Trailer option is in its own right. No stranger to war, this 1975 Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710K has passed its time in service but is currently parked somewhere in Portland, Oregon. Once this auction is over, its next rollout could be anywhere.
Pinzgauer military utes are built in Austria, named for the region’s indigenous Norico-Pinzgauer draft horse breed, and are used by militaries around the world from the UK to Saudi Arabia (follow #pinzgauer on Instagram shows an interesting combination of horses, cattle and mud). Many of the Pinzies for sale today were once enlisted by the Swiss Army. Early versions of this terrain designation had two different driveways. The 710 has four-wheel drive, while the 712 is six-wheel drive. An all-wheel-drive 716 and a six-wheel drive 718 were introduced in the 1980s.
Under the center armrest of the 710K Pinz is a 2.5-liter air-cooled 4-cylinder engine with 89 horsepower and a 5-speed manual transmission. The symbol K denotes that it is a hardtop wagon and has a capacity of five passengers. Other versions like 712AMB-Y (three-door ambulance) and 712FW (fire truck) have more specific missions.
Riding the Pinzgauer is about experiencing the terrain without the fear of getting stuck. Its clearance is measured in feet. This 710K features a two-speed transmission, locking differentials front and rear, and port axles that allow the axles to sit higher than the wheel hubs for ground clearance. The biggest obstacle Pinz faced was the highway. Due to the extreme level of capability, the 710 can only reach a top speed of 68 mph. That’s more than the 6×6’s 62 mph limit, but these military trucks are built to dominate intensive operations, not paved ovals.
Its motor and electrical system are designed to be well protected and waterproof. They use two oil pumps to prevent starvation because that’s how this little Unimog can tilt. With a wading depth of more than 27 inches, rivers or ditches won’t stop Pinzgauer. They also have a new out-towing ability jeep fighterthough its rating varies depending on whether you’re traversing the mud or on the sidewalk.
The current owner has outfitted this 710K with some meaningful updates. The 16-inch black steel wheels are from Ford Transit and wrapped in BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 tires. Rancho shock absorbers and Mastercraft limiter straps have also been installed. To make it more livable, the seller has added heated front seats and a backup rearview mirror camera.
Looking back at previous auctions, the value of these tiny Pinzies spans more than its front track. A great refurbishment 1986 718 sold for $100,000 in May 2022. A significantly cleaner soft top 1974 710 sold for $12,200 in 2018. Bid for this example is $700 as of this writing with five days left to bid.
