MANGALURU / BENGALURU: As BJP workers continue to resign and protest across Karnataka over a lack of protections for Hindu activists, Dakshina Kannada police on Thursday arrested two men in connection with the killings. killed staff member of the youth wing of the Praveen Nettaru party.
Police Superintendent Dakshina Kannada Rishikesh Sonawane identified the two suspects arrested as Zakir (29 years old) from Savanoor and Shafiq (27 years old) from Bellare. Nettaru (32 years old) was attacked to death by unidentified motorcycle assailants in Bellare on Tuesday night.
Both people arrested are believed to be members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India (PFI). Police said they have yet to determine a motive. Additional Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar said 21 people from different institutions have been detained and are being questioned.
CM Basavaraj Bommai, who canceled events to mark one year of his government and three years in power by the BJP, rushed to Mangaluru on Thursday night and met Nettaru’s family in Bellare. He presented a compensation check for Rs 25 lakh to Nuthana, the wife of Nettaru. The party state unit also claimed compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a house. Among others who have offered compensation are BY Vijayendra (5 lakh Rs), CN Ashwath Narayan (10 lakh Rs), K Gopalaiah (5 lakh Rs) and MP Renukacharya (1 lakh Rs).
Before leaving Bengaluru, Bommai said, “If the situation calls for it, Yoga Model UP administration will be adopted in Karnataka to deal with anti-national and community elements trying to create unrest in the state. ”
Clamor for ‘model Yogi’ – refers to strict measures, including the use of bulldozers to demolish the homes of anti-social elements, allegedly carried out by order of UP CM Yogi Adityanath aims to control alleged activities against the nation in the state – which developed in Karnataka after the murder of Nettaru.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said some of the people being questioned were charged in serious cases. Zakir sued him for a crime under Section 324 of the IPC (arbitrary injury with a dangerous weapon). “He was the main defendant in the Nettaru murder case,” he said.
Police obtained CCTV footage near Nettaru’s chicken shop, showing a person moving around suspiciously. Footage shows the suspect waiting by the side of the road on a bicycle for about 30 minutes before heading to the store shortly before the murders took place.
Accusing the government of failing to protect them, BJP functions at the cadre level from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Tumakuru and Chikkamagaluru continued to submit their resignations to their fellow party members on Thursday. A band is observed in the towns of Koppa and Chikkamagaluru in Chikkamagaluru district. In Bengaluru, several Hindu activists protested in front of City Hall against the BJP government. Party authorities that have deployed to convince the resignations to change their mind have not been successful.
Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting that the investigation into Nettaru’s murder be handed over to the NIA.
