An example of a bruise GMC Hummer EV arrived in Australia, purpose unknown at this stage.
A variety of spy pictures, uploaded All Australian electric vehicle parts Facebook group, show Hummer EV at Sydney International Airport wrapped in clear plastic and mesh, on an in-flight cargo pallet.
This is undeniably a GMC Hummer EV as the photos clearly show the silhouette of the car and from the back there is the word Hummer on the rear door. There are also some photos showing the flat underbody.
It is still unclear why the GMC Hummer EV is available in Australia. It could be for testing or promotional purposes before the official local launch, but this has not been confirmed.
We’ve reached out to General Motors Specialty Vehicle (GMSV) to find out why this Hummer EV is available in Australia and will update this story when we have a response.
It should be noted that GMSV may not be the company that brought the Hummer EV to Australia, rather an American pickup conversion company like AUSMV or Performax.
If so, it would be the first time either of these left-to-right pickup truck conversion companies has imported a Hummer EV.
When GMC unveiled the Hummer EV in October 2020, General Motors said it would not make any announcements regarding global markets outside of North America, at that stage.
The general feedback so far from GMSV is that it is currently focusing on offering gasoline-powered engines Silverado pick up and Escort ship to showrooms across Australia and New Zealand.
Hummer EV weighs a pig 4110kg In Version 1 guise and pack a three-motor electric drive system that GMC claims can create 745kW power and 15,591Nm of the torque at the wheels – although this is the wheel torque figure and not the engine’s torque, and therefore cannot be directly compared with the figure quoted by opponents.
It has a claimed range of 329 miles (529km), can tow 7500 pounds (3401kg), has a payload capacity of 1300 pounds (589kg) and sprints 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in approx. three seconds.
The GMC Hummer EV is GM’s first vehicle to use the latest generation of battery and electric vehicle architecture, known as the Ultium.
It will be used by a fleet of vehicles from the Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands, from the mid-size category Chevrolet Equinox EV all the way up to the top Cadillac Celestiq luxury sedans.
GM recently revealed Chevrolet Silverado EV, more work-focused than the lifestyle-oriented GMC Hummer EV and a more direct rival to the Ford F-150 Lightning. It will be available in the US from 2023.
Neither the Silverado EV nor the F-150 Lightning are confirmed to launch in Australia at this stage.
