Soon there will be a new one Mazda CX-60 will be on the shores of Australia, with the mid-size SUV rolling off the production line now.
Mazda has officially started mass production of its more luxurious models CX-60 Mid-size SUV at Hofu Factory No. 2 in Yamaguchi, Japan.
The Japanese automaker celebrated the start of production by holding a “shutdown ceremony” attended by around 100 people involved in the production process, as well as Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto .
Orders are already open for the CX-60 in Europe ahead of its launch in the northern fall of this year.
The CX-60 will arrive in Australia for the period ending 2022, with pricing and specifications to be announced closer to launch.
Mazda Australia has yet to confirm what powertrain will be offered on the CX-60 locally other than the petrol plug-in hybrid, but has previously said Full range of engines on the table.
CX-60’s 2.5 liter plug-in hybrid four-cylinder (PHEV) The e-Skyactiv powertrain produces a total system output of 241kW power and 500Nm of torque, and use a 17.8kWh lithium-ion battery.
It is worth noting that the CX-60 plug-in hybrid is the most powerful road car the brand has ever produced.
Mazda Japan has also confirmed the CX-60 will also be offered with Skyactiv-G 2.5 liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine with the same bore and stroke as the 2.5 liter PHEV, making 138kW and 250Nm.
It’s not clear whether Mazda Australia has chosen to bring this less powerful engine here, which is said to upset the CX-60’s position relative to a similarly sized, but more popular model. CX-5 The mid-size SUV is also available with 2.5 liters.
The CX-60 is also available with a range of e-Skyactiv D and Skyactiv-D . 3.3 liter inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.
Skyactiv-D production 170kW between 4000 and 4200 rpm and 500Nm between 1500 and 3000 rpm.
E-Skyactiv D, including a 48V mild hybrid system, produces more power and torque: 187kW at 3750 rpm and 550Nm between 1500 and 2400 rpm.
There is also a 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with the output still unconfirmed.
All engine variants of the CX-60 will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a multi-disc clutch and an integrated engine/generator in place of a hydraulic converter as the input clutch.
All-wheel drive is provided by a new system that uses an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch.
CX-60 gauge 4740mm Long, 1890mm wide and 1685mm above one 2870mm The standard long.
That makes it 190 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 10 mm taller than the CX-5, with a 170 mm longer wheelbase.
It is also 32mm longer, 1mm narrower, and 9mm taller than BMW X3 on a 6mm longer wheelbase.
The CX-60 is based on the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which Mazda says will underpin five hybrid models – at least some of which will use Toyota’s hybrid system – plus five PHEVs and three electric vehicles (EVs).
This architecture has been developed for both front- and all-wheel drive vehicles with transverse engines, as well as rear- or all-wheel drive vehicles – such as the CX-60 – with longitudinal engines.
It’s separate from Mazda’s upcoming Skyactiv Scalable Electric Vehicle Architecture, where the first vehicle will debut in 2025.
The CX-60 is the first of four new SUV models from Mazda called the Big Product group.
Mazda has previously confirmed the CX-60 will have a three-row version called the CX-80, designed for markets like Japan and Europe.
Also using the new rear/all-wheel drive system will be the two-row CX-70 and the wider three-row CX-90, designed for the US market.
Since we received two three-row Mazda SUVs in Australia – CX-8 and CX-9 – maybe we have multiple models on this architecture. Mazda Australia previously said they consider all four options.
Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak said it would not be assumed that Mazda’s upcoming SUV models will immediately mark the end of current models such as the CX-8 and CX-9.
That suggests new Grand Architecture models could be sold alongside existing models, at least for a while.
