Land Roverthe next generation of Range Rover Sport has been tracked in plug-in hybrid electrification (PHEV).
It was a little quiet on Range Rover Sport front for several months now, with the last notable thing The spy prototype seems to be a complete SVR model.
This new generation Range Rover Sport was originally slated to be launched around the same time as the fifth generation Range Rover flagship.
While this is unlikely to happen, a reveal is expected to come close.
In addition, the next-generation Range Rover Sport will use a variant of Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) MLA Flex architecture, as used in the fifth-generation Range Rover.
It will also offer a range of 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel variants, as well as PHEV and all-electric powertrains.
We already know Jaguar Land Rover will use BMW’s electric motor, the type of engine used in BMW iX3in the all-electric Range Rover Sport.
The high-performance SVR is also expected to feature a variant of the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 used in many BMW models, including M550i xDrive and Competition M8 in different states of tune.
Based on spy shots, this Range Rover Sport prototype appears to have the same wheelbase as the current generation, but with shorter front and rear overhangs.
There is a charging cap on the left rear wheel arch that indicates the prototype is a PHEV. Previous internal combustion engine (ICE) Range Rover Sport prototypes had a fuel cap on the right rear wheel arch.
The overall design seems to be an improvement on the current model rather than a complete redesign.
At the front, we can see more slimmer headlights as well as a redesigned front end with a new grille and air intakes.
The rear part of the prototype is still quite covered but part of the horizontal taillights can be seen.
These taillights are expected to be as thin as above Velar and Evoque.
Inside, we expect to see the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, with a host of widescreen displays, configurable options, and over-the-air updates.
Land Rover has previously said it will unveil six all-electric variants by 2026, with the first coming in 2024.
It is unclear whether these electric vehicles will be standalone vehicles or an adaptation of existing models such as Defender.
Future Land Rover vehicles will be built on two platforms. The MLA Flex will support both hybrid and electric, where the EMA platform will also support hybrid but with a greater focus on battery-powered vehicles.
The current second-generation Range Rover Sport has been on sale in Australia since 2013.
As the company’s second best-selling model after the Defender, there’s a lot of pressure to ensure Land Rover gets this next-generation Range Rover Sport.
In 2021, Land Rover sold a total of 1475 Range Rover Sport models.
It has been outsold by people like Mercedes-Benz GLE wagons (sales 3591), BMW X5 (Sales 3173), and Audi Q7 (Sales 1646).
Range Rover Sport has sold better Porsche Cayenne wagon and coupe (435 and 402 sales respectively), Jaguar F-Pace (Sales of 401), and Maserati Levante (Sales 393) though.
