3 Wounded in US Shooting, Luxury Residences in Washington are on Lockdown

Three people were injured Friday after a gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon in an upscale neighborhood of the US capital, police said.
The Connecticut Avenue-Van Ness neighborhood in Washington was cordoned off following the mid-afternoon shooting and residents were evacuated as police searched for the gunman.
Assistant Sheriff Stuart Emerman said three people were taken to hospital – two adults in critical but stable condition and a girl with minor gunshot wounds.
Emerman told reporters that police do not have any suspects in custody and are conducting searches of homes and apartment buildings in the area.
“We have no incentive at the moment,” Emerman said. “We’ve locked down the neighborhood.”
Neighboring residents could be seen being evacuated by police, who flooded the area with dozens of heavily armed officers.
Several ambulances were also at the scene.
Videos on social media appeared to show automatic gunfire that lasted near a high school and a university in the vicinity, which also houses several embassies.
Police were seen pointing weapons at an apartment building as they escorted residents from the area where the shooting took place.
The University of the District of Columbia, across from the site of the shooting, has been locked down.
“The shooting is taking place near a student residence located on Van Ness Road / Connecticut Avenue, NW. The suspect remains on parole,” the school said in a statement on Twitter.
“Law enforcement is on the scene. Please take cover and remain in place until further notice.”
