Forget sports. The new extrovert trend in crossovers is not “go fast”, but “go anywhere”. And, frankly, while sporty crossovers may seem like something of a paradox, off-roading models feel much better suited to the entire SUV model range. .
Trail-ready trim levels for midsize or recent 3-row crossovers include the GMC Acadia XT4, Honda Pilot TrailSport, Hyundai Palisade XRT, Kia Telluride X-Pro, and Ford Explorer Timberline.
While the aforementioned vehicles vary in their true off-road capabilities, they all feature special wheels and tires, additional ride heights, and unique interior and exterior trim. And, they’re all priced somewhere between the mid-range trim and top-of-the-line versions of each lineup.
Consumer Guide recently spent a week with the Ford Explorer 2022 in Timberline guise. We found that the off-road hardware and trim did little to detract from the Explorer’s basic utility, while enhancing the midsize Ford’s look and giving us a bit of insight.
In fact, if it were our money, we might choose Timberline over the premium Platinum trim, because we like the casual rustic look, lower price, and proper equipment. with Snow-Belt. And, who knows, we might actually venture off the sidewalk if given the chance.

5 interesting things about Ford Explorer Timberline

Muscle for a base engine, Ford’s 2.3-liter “EcoBoost” four-cylinder provides plenty of transmission and fusion, while also generating peak torque at low speeds. Also found under the hood of the Ford Mustang, this smooth four-cylinder makes 300 horsepower and pairs well with the standard and responsive 10-speed automatic transmission. Note that some of our drivers have complained that the transmission shifts too much when traffic stops and goes, which they find annoying.

Four-cylinder mileage
Most of the time in city driving, we found 19 mpg better with our Timberline test. While that’s lower than the EPA’s estimates for trucks, it’s better than what we’re used to seeing for a 3-row AWD crossover and surprisingly good given the extra ride height. and terrain-ready tires. And, as recently noted above, the Explorer Timberline is no slouch in the muscle department.

Impressive ride and handling
The Explorer Timberline is more about sporty handling and surprising with a pleasurable ride. However, ride quality is not affected as the suspension absorbs most of the imperfections on the road without any problems and stabilizes well during long highway driving.

Legal Off-Road Bits
While we haven’t evaluated the Timberline’s off-road performance, we’re impressed with some of the hardware and upgrades that come as standard equipment. Chief among the updates is the enhanced ride height. The Timberline boasts a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, about an inch higher than other Explorers. The additional ground clearance will prove useful when crossing deep snow or when crossing roads with deep marks. Also interesting is the Torsen-branded rear differential, which will provide extra traction when things get tough. The Timberline also has standard front tow hooks, but if you really need to use them, you might mistake your Explorer for a Ford Bronco.

Looks great
It may be a short-lived trend, but we really like the black wheels, accentuated by the Forged Green Metallic paint seen on our test truck. Additionally, the sensible use of red exterior accents, especially the tow hooks, adds just the right level of sporty flair. The cabin is in keeping with the business style, although the orange, sorry, tangerine, sports upholstery contrasts just enough. The seats look sturdy and attractive; They are also quite comfortable.
