5 interesting things about Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Black 2023
The vast size of the small crossover market in the US makes it possible for even a relatively slow-selling model of its kind to reach a large number here. Depending on how you count your crossovers, about 1.7 million small SUVs were sold in the US last year. That’s a lot of crossover.
And, among the 15 most popular compact crossovers, the Volkswagen Tiguan ranks 12thlame pants in terms of total sales, which is somewhere between the Ford Escape and the GMC Terrain in terms of total sales in the United States. While that may sound a bit grim, we’re still talking about almost 90,000 units, which is a significant volume.
Consumer Guide recently spent a week with the 2023 Tiguan and found ourselves scratching our heads wondering why Americans haven’t been interested in this neat and sporty German crossover.
Despite our complaints—the throttle response at low speeds is less linear and the engine isn’t particularly tuned—we found a lot to like about VW’s second small crossover. (The Taos subcompact, new for the 2022 model year, is the smallest crossover in the VW lineup.)
Our impressions, shared below, are based on the Tiguan SE R-Line Black 2023, in terms of price and content higher than the mid-range S and SE, but lower than the well-equipped SEL R-Line in the lineup. Tiguan products. The SE R-Line Black is essentially an SE with sporty “Black” trim, including a unique grille and front fascia, black lower body trim, special badging, and black alloy wheels. 19 inches specifically. At around $2700, the Black family of devices doesn’t deliver any meaningfully safe or comfortable content, but does upskill things a bit. We think the switch to black from the standard SE is worth the extra money, especially since it will likely affect resale value.

Modern and airy cabin
Volkswagen designers deserve a lot of credit for building a compact crossover with an expansive look and feel. There is a lot of glass area and excellent outward visibility in all directions. Which brings us to the next point…

Space
The Tiguan’s cabin is spacious, with plenty of space for adults in the first two rows of seats. Getting in and out of this compact VW is easy thanks to the wide doors and ample legroom for the rear seats. Our Tiguan is not equipped with 3rank-row seats, but previous experience suggests that it is best reserved for emergencies or the smallest passengers.

Spirited Ride and handling
While we’re not excited about the powertrain, the Tiguan does boast some sporty movements being made. Few crossovers at any price point combine sporty steering/handling with premium driving comfort like this compact VW. The Tiguan also performs well on the highway, although road and wind noise levels are somewhat higher than most cars in this segment.

Guarantee
While Hyundai and Kia claim leadership in compact crossover warranties, boasting a standard 5-year/60,000-mile warranty, most other vehicles in the segment are only offered with a standard warranty package. 3 years/36,000 standard mile basic warranty. Volkswagen splits the difference by a 4-year/48,000-mile plan. That extra coverage can be useful if some key systems fail and at the time of resale, when the extra coverage can attract potential buyers and help close the deal.

Value
With a total price of $34,640, the Tiguan SE R-Line Black feels like a strong value. If you’re not swayed by the Black trim, you can save almost $3000 by dropping to the standard SE. Note that our test car was not AWD equipped. That popular feature in Snowbelt adds $1500 to the profit.
