Walt Disney The company announced better-than-expected results last week when reveal its earnings for the second quarter of 2022 (the company’s third fiscal quarter.)
The data point that attracts the most attention? Disney’s total DTC subscriptions – including Disney+, but also Hulu and ESPN+ – hit 221.1 million.
Many titles then focused on Disney’s total streaming subscriptions now higher than Netflix. This focus is understandable – who doesn’t love a competition? But it’s also notable because their numbers are trending in the opposite direction.

As you may remember, Netflix lost nearly 970,000 net subscribers for the three-month period ending June 30. That was less than expected in April, when it predicted a loss of 2 million subscribers. And it 220.67 million subscribers isn’t too far behind Disney. But the contrast between their destinies is still striking, for good reason.
