Good: Good handling for a pickup, useful storage in bed
Not so good: Disappointing fuel economy, limited cabin space
CG says:
Despite being the smallest and most low-tech midsize pickup on the market, Toyota’s resilient Tacoma remains the best-selling truck in its class. Credit the reputation for quality, legit off-road power, and bulletproof resale value for much of the Tacoma’s appeal. However, the story is much more than that. When you get past the slightly odd driving position — the Tacoma’s body is oddly narrow from floor to roof — and start driving, you realize the Toyota pickup truck is quite worth the drive. Plus in a moment.
For 2021, Toyota has added the Trail Edition package to the Tacoma lineup. The off-road-oriented equipment group is available only in the SR5 trim level, and only with the V6 engine and on the Double Cab (crew cabin) bodywork.
The package includes some specific trim, as well as sliding panels, a limited-slip rear differential, suspension upgrades, and a useful, locked bed storage system. The 110-volt outlet on the bed is also part of the group, as are the copper-tone 16-inch alloy wheels.
The Trail Edition package neatly arranges price and content between the trail-ready TRD Off-Road (starts around $37,000) and top TRD Pro (about $48,000 to start).
Note that for 2023, the Trail Edition is on sale from the package level to the trim level, although the actual price increases only slightly. In another big Tacoma news, all trim levels switch to push-button engine start. Finally, you can keep that key in your pocket.
While we could never have awarded the Tacoma our own in the Consumer Guide’s Best Buy category—mainly due to the tight cabin space and some vintage tech, we really appreciated it. truck — especially in Trail Edition guise. To be clear, here are 6 Cools things about the Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition.
6 interesting things about Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition 2022
Fun to Drive: Part 1
The Tacoma can only do it with a six-speed automatic, something that reduces fuel economy, but it’s an incredibly good six-speed automatic. Count on any Tacoma V6 to deliver smooth acceleration and plenty of overtaking and matching power. The six torque also provides a substantial growl at low speeds, useful if you’re venturing on the road.
Fun to Drive: Part 2
Tacoma handles well for a truck. We especially appreciated the quick, direct steering and the braking system that feels solid.

Good price
We don’t call the Trail Edition cheap, we just appreciate its place in the Tacoma lineup. Most people don’t need all of the TRD Pro’s off-road power, or it costs more. Also, we really like these wheels, which are exclusive to the Trail Edition.

Cool bed storage
The in-bed storage system included in the Trail Edition package includes two nightstands, one that locks, the other that works as well as an icebox. If you usually don’t need all the space in your truck’s bed, these chubby-looking hobbies will prove handy.

Boom
If you like a little acoustic feedback from your engine, you’ll appreciate the available TRD Performance exhaust system. The $799 option certainly enhances the sporty Trail Edition driving experience and manages to not be too noisy in casual driving. If the sports exhaust system has a big impact on horsepower, Toyota doesn’t say so.
Fun colors
Toyota’s truck color pallets are among the most entertaining in the industry. For 2023, the Trail Edition Tacoma can come in Magnetic Gray, Super White, Midnight Black (which looks good with the bronze wheels), and our favorite, Lunar Rock, as seen. here. Regardless of paint color, all Trail versions come with black fabric seats with copper trim.
