Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the government is working to free thousands of acres of land in the country’s urban areas from the pile of rubbish that has been dumped there for decades, and convert them into green areas in the next few years. .
He said the garbage treatment capacity of municipalities in the country has quadrupled since 2014.
He attributed the use of biofuels to reduce India’s dependence on other countries for petroleum products, saying that the blending of ethanol in gasoline, in the past, was only about 2% in eight years. back here, has now increased to about 8%.
Prime Minister Modi was speaking after virtually inaugurating the Rs 550 capacity Bio-CNG ‘gobar-dhan’ factory, based on the innovation concept of waste to wealth, in Madhya Pradesh city, Indore.
Prime Minister Modi said: “Thousands of tons of garbage exist on an area of thousands of acres for decades in cities across the country, that is the main cause of the spread of the disease because it causes air and water pollution”.
Therefore, in the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the government is working to free such lands of garbage heaps, he said.
“The point is that our cities should get rid of these piles of rubbish in the next two to three years and such places can be converted into green areas,” he said. State governments are being supported. all means to achieve this goal”.
Prime Minister Modi said material recovery facilities are being developed at more than 1,600 citizen institutions to remove single-use plastics.
“Our efforts are aimed at developing such arrangements in every city of the country to promote the circular economy,” he added.
The prime minister says cleanliness promotes tourism as every city in the country has historical and religious sites.
“If cities are clean, people from other places will enjoy visiting more. Cleanliness promotes tourism and it kicks off a new economy,” he said, adding that people come visit Indore just to see the arrangements made for the sake of cleanliness.
Over the next two years, work is being done to set up such gobar-dhan Bio-CNG Plants in 75 major city agencies of the country, he said.
“This campaign will be of great help in making India’s cities clean, pollution free and moving them towards clean energy,” he said.
The prime minister said not only in the cities but a large number of gobar-dhan biogas plants are also being installed in the rural areas and the cattle breeders are getting extra income from cow dung.
“All of these efforts will help India achieve its climate commitments,” he said.
He said that wastewater treatment facilities are being increased in civilian facilities, where less than a thousand people reside.
“India doesn’t own oil wells and depends on other countries for the production of petroleum products. Ethanol blends in gasoline used to be only 1% to 2% from 7 to 8 years ago in India, now it’s gone. up to about 8%,” he said.
Prior to 2014, the supply of ethanol for blending was about 40 crore liters, now up to 300 crore liters. This has helped sugar mills and farmers, Modi said.
He accused governments before 2014 of being indifferent to solar power generation.
“But our government has given the impetus to increase solar power production after 2014. This has resulted in India being ranked among the top countries in the world for production,” he said. solar power.
The Prime Minister said that farmers are now becoming suppliers of solar electricity.
Complimenting the residents of Indore, he said that they separate their waste into six segments to facilitate handling and recycling.
Such efforts will help make the Swachh Bharat Mission a success, he said, adding that the word ‘Life’ actually stands for ‘environmental lifestyle’.

Referring to Indore’s status as a ‘waterable’ city, the Prime Minister said the government is working to bring more and more of the country’s cities into this category.
