8 Best Travel Bags (2022): Carry-On Luggage, Duffel, Budget
Not every good product can claim the title of best, but there are a few other bags we’ve tested that get our approval and deserve a mention.
Solgaard Carry-On Closet Plus ($295) Is one small compared to what most airlines list as the maximum size, but the difference is so small it’s acceptable 95% of the time. WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe praises the optional clip-in closet organizer for efficient packing. The integrated TSA lock is easy to use and has an internal power backup pocket. This suitcase is included in Favorite Upgrade Product guide.
Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On ($152) is a hard-sided four-wheeled gyro, made from a durable polypropylene outer shell. Standout features include interior fabric made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and a “WetPak” storage bag to keep wet items separate from the rest of your luggage. Product reviewer Medea Giordano, a notorious packer, was able to fit an entire weekend’s wardrobe in Outline Pro.
40L Patagonian Black Hole ($129) is another great adventure duffel with waterproof fabric and backpack straps. Compared to the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler, however, the outer fabric is less water-resistant, and it’s an inch and a half too thick for US domestic carry requirements. But it’s duffel, so you can shrink it to fit in the overhead bin if it’s not fully packed yet.
Paravel Aviator International Carry-On ($345) It has an interior lining made of recycled plastic bottles, a telescopic handle made of recycled aluminum and vegan leather trim to help it stand out from all the plain black bags at the airport. Product reviewer Jaina Gray really loved the spacious interior and durable, scratch-resistant exterior.
The North Face Summer Camp ($129) was a cylindrical duffel bag, unlike most duffel bags today. If you’re a brochure, it can be difficult to keep everything straight and wrinkle-free when you pack it into the curved bottom of the Base Camp, although those who roll their clothes shouldn’t have any problems. The materials feel cheaper than the other duffle bags in this guide. It’s a workhorse often used by outdoor crowds, so while the water-resistant fabric and handles are durable, they don’t feel nice to the touch.
Larger Takeout ($295) offers all the same handy interior organizer modules as our top luxury hard-shell pick, the Away Bigger Carry-On Aluminum Edition, but for half the price. And you can choose from a variety of colors, from discreet navy blue to pink, green, or lavender. The optional, ejectable battery bank costs an extra $20.
