Latinos are the fastest growing demographic group in the United States, and the number of people who identify is Afro-Latino in the 2020 Census number more than 1.3 million. Each state and the District of Columbia reported demographic growth, and for the first time in the country, birth, not immigration, was responsible for the increase.
Unfortunately, some who identify as both Black and Latinx say that while the community is growing, a general sense of acceptance is not. In fact, many people feel as if they are cross-cultural, and uninvited to participate in the cooking. To speak Spanish, especially in the home, is a reason for some people to feel as though they are not “really black”. Then, when these people are among the Hispanics, the anti-Black faction, even without malice, can be hurt. Jokes about dark skin and comments about unraveling the bloodline through marriage to give a better chance of social mobility are common, but not least unwanted by those forced to endure such “advice”.
In the latest episode of Red table talking: Estefans premieres Thursday (October 14) at 9 a.m. 12 p.m. ET on Facebook Watch, things heat up when the topic of colorism in the Latinx community comes up and the guest group doesn’t mind arrive there.
Grammy Award-winning superstar Gloria Estefan lead the conversation with her daughter, Emily Estefan; and Gloria’s niece and Emmy Award-winning daytime television host, Lili Estefan. Hosts are welcome Love & Hip Hop: Miami star Amara La Negra and Queer Eye star and FAMU Rattler, Karamo BrownClick on the red chart to give an honest look at the trauma they felt growing up as a black child in a Latino family.
La Negra has been extremely vocal about her experiences, especially the racism she felt as a child star on set. Sabado Gigante, a popular Spanish variety show. Today, she’ll happily educate anyone who will listen about what it feels like to be an Afro-Latina while Brown has only recently felt comfortable accepting her Latinx roots because of the negative reactions. which he once encountered from a beloved family member as a child.
In today’s show’s exclusive clip, watch La Negra explain why she doesn’t believe people who claim to stand for the ideals of colorism or racism.

Dr. Elizabeth Hodge-Freemanan expert on colorism in Latin American countries, was also invited to join the conversation and help the panel understand more about the differences between race, nationality, and ethnicity.
In light of recent events that have challenged racial segregation and white privilege across the country and the world, the Latinx community is just one group whose members started out. confront anti-black racism between them and within their families.
