Delhi government engages with e-commerce, food delivery companies through implementation of SUP ban
The Delhi government plans to work with multiple e-commerce companies and food delivery platforms, including Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon and Flipkart, to effectively implement a ban on single-use plastic items times (SUP) in the capital, officials said Saturday.
These companies have a big business in Delhi and it only increased after the Covid pandemic, they said, stressing that it was important to get them on board to ensure that the campaign was a success.
The government will hold a roundtable with e-commerce companies along with other stakeholders such as market associations, self-help groups and industry associations to encourage and promote the use of substances. alternative to single-use plastic, officials said.
Legal experts, MCDs, enforcement officials from the DPCC will also be part of the roundtable which will be held under the chairmanship of Environment Minister Gopal Rai, they said.
Officials said the government is holding a ‘Plastic Vikalp Mela’ at Thyagraj Stadium, which will take place on 3 July and the conference will be held at the venue.
Interestingly some online platforms have started the concept of ‘plastic neutral delivery’.
On August 12 of last year, the Union Environment Department issued a notice prohibiting the production, import, storage, distribution, sale and use of identified SUP items, including polystyrene and polystyrene. extended from July 1, 2022.
Identified SUP items include earbuds, plastic balloon sticks, flags, lollipop, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermoplastic), plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays , wrapping or wrapping around candy boxes, invitations, cigarette packs, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns in size, and agitators.
In Delhi, the Department of Revenue and the Delhi Pollution Control Commission have set up 33 and 15 teams, respectively, to ensure enforcement of the ban.
Delhi generates 1,060 tons of plastic waste every day. Single-use plastics are estimated to account for 5.6% (or 56kg per ton) of total solid waste in the capital.
