A 129-foot luxury superyacht worth millions of dollars sinks off the coast of Italy
Roman:
A $7.8 million 39.4-meter (129-foot) superyacht capsized and plunged into the Ionian Sea this weekend, with the Italian Coast Guard taking action to rescue them all. nine people on board.
The ship, My Saga, was sailing through Squillace Bay on Saturday night when the coast guard answered a call from the crew that the stern was full of water. It sent a ship to the yacht, 9 nautical miles from the coast, to rescue four passengers and a member of the crew, according to Italy’s ANSA electronic service.
They returned the next morning with a tugboat to carry My Saga ashore and pick up the captain and three remaining crew members, at which point sea conditions became more severe and the yacht was severely paralyzed. It sank in the early afternoon.
It is not clear who the owner of My Saga is, traveling under the Cayman Islands flag. It was built by Italian shipbuilder Cantieri San Marco and designed by famous British superyacht designer Tim Heywood. The ship, which has a teak deck and can accommodate up to 12 passengers, is one of only 1,068 motor yachts in the 35 to 40 meter size range, according to Boat International.
The Italian coast guard has shared a video capturing the final moments of the 15-year-old luxury yacht before it plunges forward and sinks into the sea. Authorities are investigating the cause.

Rory Jackson, head of superyachts at VesselsValue, said the scale of the accident was rare in the world of sailing.
“If the highest level of safety is observed and procedures are followed properly, they are less likely to happen,” he said. “There will now be a period of investigation to determine exactly what happened and why. We can all be grateful that the crew got out unharmed.”
