A Sci-Fi Series About Disaster That’s a Travesty Itself

Dean Devlin has made a career out of larger-than-life sci-fi movies, producing regular partners Roland Emmerich‘S star gate, Independence Day, and monsterand more recent direction geological storm. So even though it’s out on Syfy and not in theaters, ark fits comfortably into the body of his work, insofar as it’s another story about apocalyptic planetary threats and humanity’s desperate quest to prevent extinction.

Unfortunately, it is also a disaster-oriented program that is itself a disaster.

ark is set in an unknown future in which the Earth is on the verge of becoming uninhabitable. In response, humanity built a huge collection of ships known as Arks aimed at a distant planet suitable for colonization.

If you’re hoping for more specifics about the ecological disaster that prompted this effort, or these travelers’ particular cosmic destination, you should stop, as Devlin’s series doesn’t—at least. is in the first four volumes made available to the press—filling in those gaps. Instead, it simply assumes that viewers will agree with this scenario as it is familiar with such genre-friendly concepts as vertical speed and teleportation.

Devlin’s story begins in chaos, with blaring alarms indicating that a sudden collision of the ship has resulted in the hull being punctured, thus waking Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) from Frozen sleep just in time to wake her teammates and race them to safety before the entire bay is engulfed in flames. destroyed.

These men and women survived by their teeth, but their commander was not so lucky, leaving behind only three lieutenants— Garnet, gritty Spencer Lane (Reece Ritchie) and James Brice (Richard Fleeshman) on their own. believe — taking control of their Ark It was a gamble, as this incident left the ship with minimal food supplies and even less water, and certainly not enough to go. to the end of their alien world, where there is still a year to go.

An ardent, responsible leader, Garnet immediately assumes the role of commander, much to Spencer’s annoyance, and she’s lucky enough to discover that she has a group of compatriots available to her. capacity to help solve their pressing problems. problems.

Angus (Ryan Adams) is a gardener who conveniently brings a huge crate of super-fertile soil onto the Ark (in case their new home turns out to be less abundant than the tests have shown. ), and in a flash he’d retrofitted a warehouse into a greenhouse, where he could grow enough food for everyone.

As for fetching water, the first task is to retrofit the ship’s water recycling system, a task that belongs to Eva Markovic (Tiana Upcheva), a hardened engineer who is engaged in a secret affair ( as it is prohibited by regulation) with Harris. Beckner (Dominik Cicak).

Eva’s secret relationship with Harris is not arkits only romance; Angus quickly develops feelings for Alicia Nevins (Stacey Read), a waste management worker who is truly a super genius, although she has her eye on Baylor Trent (Miles Barrow), who has an interest relationship with superiors much older than his years until her death. along with the rest of the high-level commands.

This trio gives the show a bit of a YA love triangle sentiment. Alas, it’s marred by the fact that Angus is an insufferable animator and Alicia is an even more annoyingly lovable mouth robot whose every word makes one wish he had. A black hole magically appeared on the horizon of the Ark.

Given that its exploration was roughly interrupted by a mysterious mishap, The Ark was frequently in danger during the first chapters of the series. Devlin and his creative team try to keep things dangerously tense through both mechanical and logistical difficulties as well as interpersonal conflict.

The most notable of which involves a man named Jasper Dades (Chris Leask), who is revealed to be an impostor and — after blackmailing Garnet with potentially deadly dirt — after that was murdered. ark thus a kind of whodunit, with security chief Felix Strickland (Pavle Jerinic) leading an investigation into the murder complicated by the possibility that other crew members may also be operating under false identities. .

ark often throwing suspicion around, only to quickly dispel it and move on to other potential suspects. At the same time, it weakly tries to create many of its characters. Those include Cat Brandice (Christina Wolfe), a shallow celebrity therapist who is the famous face of this costly venture, and Dr. Sanjivni Kabir (Shalini Peiris), the medical guru. the only standard left on board to deal with physical and mental rashes. Mental illnesses tormented her teammates.

Together, they are a group that is outwardly diverse, but all resonate as one-dimensional types, their personalities reduced to a few checklist traits, and their circumstances as dull as the interior. Ark’s pristine gray interior. It doesn’t help that the show’s cast is equally dull, their performances goofy, broad, and utterly unconvincing, whether they’re bickering like schoolchildren, behaving crookedly, or performing extraordinary feats outside the ship in an attempt to discover and fix the root cause of their intergalactic troubles.

There are many races through the corridors in ark, as well as disgruntled crew members, sabotage-centered plots, and acrimonious dialogue. What’s missing is compelling action, usable CGI, and a sense of all of this taking place in a larger setting. Worse yet, the film focuses more on sci-fi obstacles and obstacles (Doodad is on the way! Whatchamacallit is leaking!) than it is about compelling human relationships or those thorny sociopolitical ideas. There’s nothing under the hood of ark except that a lot of the ho-hum parts are borrowed from the better afterlife sagas.

arkIts first season will run for 12 episodes, so it’s always conceivable that the show will ditch the weekday adversity format—which is basically lazy considering that The Ark is, by definition, must survive — and focus on developing its protagonists in novel ways. For now, though, there’s no reason to believe in such an evolution, which the fourth episode revolves around a wannabe-bombshell revelation about Garnet landing with a thud.

far different from interstellar travel and Battlestar Galactica, Devlin’s series is devoid of any great interest or creative suspense. It’s the unimaginably conjured sci-fi formula that countless ancestors have gone before.
