Dean Devlin has made a career out of larger-than-life sci-fi movies, producing regular partners Roland Emmerich‘S star gate, Independence Day, and monsterand more recent direction geological storm. So even though it’s out on Syfy and not in theaters, ark fits comfortably into the body of his work, insofar as it’s another story about apocalyptic planetary threats and humanity’s desperate quest to prevent extinction.
Unfortunately, it is also a disaster-oriented program that is itself a disaster.
ark is set in an unknown future in which the Earth is on the verge of becoming uninhabitable. In response, humanity built a huge collection of ships known as Arks aimed at a distant planet suitable for colonization.
If you’re hoping for more specifics about the ecological disaster that prompted this effort, or these travelers’ particular cosmic destination, you should stop, as Devlin’s series doesn’t—at least. is in the first four volumes made available to the press—filling in those gaps. Instead, it simply assumes that viewers will agree with this scenario as it is familiar with such genre-friendly concepts as vertical speed and teleportation.
