AB de Villiers announces retirement “From All Cricket”
South African superstar AB de Villiers On Friday took to Twitter to announce his retirement “from all cricket”, saying that at 37, “the flame is no longer burning bright”. De Villiers, considered one of the best smashers of his generation, played an international match for the last time in April 2018 – Against Australia in Johannesburg. His last ODI match for South Africa was against India at Centurion on 16 February 2018 while he returned to his country in the shortest form on 29 October 2017.
De Villiers announced his retirement through a series of tweets.
“It has been an incredible journey, but I have decided to retire from all cricket. Ever since the last game against my brothers, I have played the match with unbelievable enjoyment and enthusiasm. restrained. Now, at the age of 37, that Flame no longer burns brightly,” said the South African.
“It’s a reality I have to accept – and, even if it seems abrupt, that’s why I’m making this announcement today. I’ve had my time. Cricket has treated me. Cricket has been especially nice to me. Whether playing for Titans, Proteas or RCB, or around the world, the game has given me experiences and opportunities beyond my imagination, and I will always be grateful.”

Despite not appearing in South Africa for over three years, de Villiers continued to showcase his talents in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The South African has formed a wonderful relationship – on and off the pitch – with Indian athlete Virat Kohli.

He played 15 games at IPL 2021, scoring 313 runs averaging 31.30. His decision to retire from “all cricket” means the South African will end his IPL career with more than 5,000 runs in the tournament.
De Villiers is sixth on the list of all-time IPL runners with 5,162 runs in 184 matches for an average of 39.70. His 151.68 strike rate is the best among the top 20 runners in the league.
