Co-founder Monique “Mo” Salmon was sitting at Friend in Silver Lake when she envisioned a dance party featuring an all-black female DJ. “I find that many of my incredibly talented DJ friends, who happen to be women, don’t get the recognition and opportunities they should have,” she says. With the help of her business partner and wife, Soraya Salmon, and their group of friends of DJs and creators, THE INTERNET B4 day party went from dream to reality, attracting 100 to 150 people every two months at the same bar where it was born.
Now, five parties involved, B4 THE INTERNET has earned a reputation for delivering on its promise of nostalgia and uplifting for Black gay women, DJs and partygoers alike. “Representation is very important, and we represent everything that is Black, everything that is gay and everything that is Black woman,” said Mo Salmon, adding that allies are also welcome, “with open arms.” Fares range from $5 to $12.
As the name suggests, B4 THE INTERNET focuses on recreating the nostalgic spirit and essence that reflects the dance parties of the “simpler era”. “We want people to get together, dance and enjoy life like it was before the Internet and social media became the dominant force in our lives,” she explains. Taking advantage of the benefit of being hosted at a cocktail bar, B4 THE INTERNET offers a wide range of specialty and vintage handcrafted drinks for $10 to $15. A food truck partnership — most recently with Patty Wagon LA, a supplier of $5 NYC-style Jamaican patties — keeps dancers energized to dance all day.
“In a city like Los Angeles, events often feel more like adventurous businesses than real enjoyment,” says Mo Salmon. “We aim to bring back that original sense of freedom, being comfortable and doing the things you love without compromising who you are.”
