Adele 30: Australian journalist Matt Doran ‘regrets’ after interviewing singer without listening to new album | News about Ant-Man & Art
An Australian TV reporter’s “million dollar” interview with Adele has been completed after he admitted not listening to her new album was a “regrettable and definitive act”.
Matt Doran, who works for Channel 7, and a crew flew to London ahead of the singer’s first new LP in six years, 30 years old.
After doing the interview, it was said that Adele asked Doran if he’d heard her album – and he said he hadn’t.
As part of the agreement agreed to the sit-down conversation, it was reported that Sony had a veto over the chat – and later said it could not be broadcast.
NS Australian The Daily Telegraph reports that the deal negotiated by Channel 7 is worth $1m (£540,000) because it includes rights to Adele’s conversation with Oprah Winfrey.
After the failed incident, Doran said he missed an email with a preview copy of the album on it while flying to London on November 4.
The album comes out on Friday.
Doran told The Australian he was “deeply hurt and obviously sorry” about the incident.
“When I sat down to interview Adele, I had absolutely no idea that I had received a preview email of her unreleased album,” he said.
“I discovered it was sent to me as an ‘e-card’ link, which I somehow missed when I landed in London.
“It was an oversight but NOT an intentional sneak. This is the most important email I’ve ever overlooked.”
Initial reports suggested that the Easy On Me singer had moved beyond the interview – but Doran said: “What was meant to be 20 minutes was extended to 29 minutes. Much of the conversation was about the album.”
Doran has been criticized by other journalists – with some saying he must have been “deliberately ignorant” and that the talk was the “easiest part” of the negotiations.
