Adele talks about divorce, her son and weight loss in Oprah interview ahead of new album | News about Ant-Man & Art
Adele has spoken openly about her divorce, its effect on her son, and how people react to her weight loss in an extensive interview with talk show legend Oprah Winfrey .
The 33-year-old also performed songs from her new album 30 at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on the CBS special, ahead of its release this weekend.
Here are key moments from her performances and Sunday night’s interview.
Adele worries her new album is ‘a bit too personal’
Talk to Winfrey in the same garden where before The talk show host interviewed the Duke and Duchess of SussexAdele said she worries that her upcoming album, which she has admitted was written while going through a divorce, might be too personal.
“I think the reason I’ve been brave enough to do that in my career so far is because music has helped me in every situation and I want to do the same for lonely people… to be reminded that they not alone,” she said.
“There are moments when I’m writing a record and I think that might be a little too personal, too personal for me to reveal.
“But nothing is scarier than what I’ve been through the past few years behind closed doors.
“So I’m not scared about what people can or can’t do.”
This is her son Angelo’s first time seeing her perform live
Her performance during the two-hour special was also the first time her son, Angelo, got to see her perform live on stage – which she said made her very nervous.
Adele also tells Winfrey that 30 is dedicated to her son, and is a way of expressing “who I am”.
“The whole album isn’t about him, it’s about me, and I just wanted him to hear me talk madly, deeply about who I am and how I feel,” she said.
“I don’t know if I’d be able to chat with him in real life, so he might as well go and listen to it.”
Also among the audience at the Griffith Observatory were James Corden, Drake and Lizzo, with Adele telling the crowd that she herself joined the show.
Adele publicly mentions her weight loss – saying she’s not “shocked” by the reaction
She briefly mentioned the issue during her time on Saturday Night Live, but Adele spoke to Winfrey about her weight loss.
The singer said she has never set a goal to lose nearly 100lbs (45kg) and that she is always, and will always be, body positive.
“My body has reflected my entire career, I’m too big, I’m too small, I’m hot or not,” she says.
“I’ve never looked up at anyone because of their weight.
“I [was] body positive then and now I’m body positive – but it’s not my job to validate how people feel about their body.
“I feel bad if someone feels horrible about themselves but that’s not my job. I’m trying to sort out my own life.”
She also bragged that she can currently lift 160lbs (72kg) and that she told her trainer she wanted to be a track athlete.

For the first time we hear new tracks from 30
We’ve heard Easy On Me, her first single in her 30s, but Adele entertained LA audiences with three more tracks during her performance.
Fans have heard I Drink Wine, Hold On and Love Is A Game, as well as the aforementioned Easy On Me on the new album.
Audiences have also heard some of Adele’s classics including Hello, Rolling In The Deep, and her Bond-themed Skyfall.
Two fans in the crowd joined in with the help of Adele
Two dear fans, Quentin and Ashley, used Adele’s Griffith Observatory performance to get engaged – with the singer helping them out.
Adele asked the crowd to be quiet before Ashley was blindfolded and led onto the stage, where Quentin raised the question.
Then the singer came out, stunned Ashley, and invited them to sit in the front row with Lizzo.
She then performed Make You Feel My Love, saying mid-stream, “She’s crying without tears!”.
30 is released this weekend.
