The unsettling thing about the deal is that Broner hasn’t fought three times since 2015, and it’s hard to imagine him being so active at the end of his career.
It’s also the same company that allegedly gave Terence Crawford an eight-figure payday to defend his WBO welterweight title against David Avanesyan on December 10 on the BLK Prime PPV in Omaha, Nebraska.
In other words, they seem to have money to burn, signed older fighters. Crawford is 35 years old this year, and he has never played against anyone better at 147 than last year’s lackluster janitor Shawn Porter.
Hopefully BLK Prime knows what they’re getting into, paying huge salaries for Broner and boxer Crawford once a year has never been tested.
The 33-year-old Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) must have felt like he hit the jackpot on this deal, as his career has gone downhill since 2012. He’s only fought three times. in the past five years as of 2017. .
It will be interesting to see what opposition Broner will fight in the trio deal with BLK Prime. The last time we saw Broner, he took an unquestionably decisive round 12 win over Jovanie Santiago.
Many boxing fans see this as a robbery, feeling that Santiago has done more than enough to win. Whether you want to call it a robbery or not, you can’t deny that Broner played badly against Santiago from start to finish and was very lucky to get the victory.
Interestingly, Santiago was knocked out six rounds by Gary Antuanne Russell last May, which shows you how far Broner was on the beaten track against his talented competitor at 140.
This writer let Broner lose his last five fights to Santiago, Manny Pacquiao, Jessie Vargas, Mikey Garcia and Adrian Granados. BLK Prime awarded Broner a huge $10 million contract with his supposed 0-5 record in his last five games being extremely unsettling.
If BLK Prime wants to throw money at boxers, they need to target the boys who are still young and win matches with quality opposition. Broner hasn’t beaten an opponent at a decent level since his win over Antonio DeMarco in 2012. That was many years ago.
