Via Barry Holbrook: Athlete Frank Warren says he would have no problem fighting former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and undefeated Joe Joyce if he could.
Warren notes that it will be a “great fight” between Joyce (14-0, 13 KOs), who is burning division, and Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs). If Wilder hadn’t injured his hand, he could have kicked Joyce out because he’s too easy to hit.
Last Saturday night, boxing fans on social media raved about the idea of a fight between Deontay and Joyce following ‘Juggernaut’ fourth round knockout win before Christian Hammer (October 27, 17 KO) at Wembley Arena in London, England.
Joyce got past some tough right-handed shots from the Hammers in the skirmish but beat him four times to equalize in the fourth half.
On Twitter, fans talked about wanting to see if Joyce could pull off power shots from Wilder’s right hand the same way he did against Hammer.
Deontay is expected to return later this year after losing his second fight to Tyson Fury last October. There’s no word on whether Deontay will fight for his comeback, but it’s fair to say that it’s NOT Joyce.
That’s the last person Wilder needs to integrate when he returns to the ring after consecutive knock-out defeats to Tyson Fury.
“I had no problem doing that fight,” Warren said. iFL TV when asked about his thoughts on pairing Joe Joyce with Deontay Wilder.
“Absolutely, no matter if it’s there and can be done, I’d love to do it. Why don’t we try and make that fight? It will be a great fight. No problem.
“Of course, if it lands, but can you imagine Joe landing [shots] on his chin. No problem. I can talk to Shelly [Finkell] about it.
“I think he [Wilder] I’m hearing about a comeback fight, but I don’t know if it’s true, that he’s back with a fight back in the fall in the United States.
“Joe fights on September 24th. We’re studying the opponent. We worked before the fight, hoping he would pull through, which he did.
“We wanted to be in a position where we would announce something early next week to him, and get it and sell. That’s what we’re looking to try and do.
“He had to get the cobwebs out of his system. He’s been out for a year. He had that terrible injury. He broke his wrist, it was a complete, complete fracture.
“It’s not like he’s afraid to throw punches. He just got on with it. He has to get rid of the rust in his system. He was cropped, like he did in a lot of his fights in there, definitely early in the fight and he took those pictures,” Warren said of Joyce shooting.
