Agent Zomato rides a bike in the heat, Twitter raises funds to buy him a bike
Ordering food online has become one of the convenient and uncomplicated options. With just a few taps and clicks, your favorite dishes will be packed and delivered to your door. Although we have many apps and websites for online food ordering at our fingertips, not many of us know what goes on behind the scenes. The plight of delivery workers – working day and night to earn a living together – has been repeatedly highlighted on social media. Another incident surfaced on Twitter recently as reported by user Aditya Sharma. The 18-year-old used the microblogging platform to share the challenge of a Zomato delivery agent, and it went viral. Sharma wrote on Twitter how he ordered food from Zomato and it was delivered on time, but was surprised to see the delivery man riding his bike in the scorching summer heat. This worries Sharma, especially since he lives in Rajasthan, where soaring temperatures often pass 40 degrees Celsius or more. Further investigation revealed that the agent, Durga Meena, is 31 years old and has been delivering the goods for the past 4 months. A commerce graduate, Meena wanted to pursue further studies but had to apply for a job due to her financial condition.
Delivery worker Durga Meena manages to make about 10-12 deliveries in a day for a living of 10,000 rupees per month. He was trying to save money on a bike and asked Twitter user Sharma for help to pay off Rs. 75 thousand for the same. Sharma then urged Twitter users to come along and contribute to a good cause.
There has been a large crowdfunding support for delivery staff Durga Meena. The tweet went viral within a day, receiving over 65,000 likes and thousands of retweets and comments. Twitter users not only increased the amount for the upfront but much higher Rs. 1.4 thousand. Help and money kept pouring in, and Zomato’s delivery man finally got his bike with the help of the internet. Watch:
