By Gerardo Granados: Last Saturday, October 28, at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, top pound-for-pound female fighter Amanda Serrano defeated fringe challenger Danila Ramos by a wide unanimous decision, with identical scores of 120-108 in all scorecards.
This is a usual result for Serrano, who is the undisputed WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO featherweight champion; what makes this fight important is the fact that this one became the very first official female fight to go complete three-minute rounds at twelve rounds female title fight.
In the times we live in, it has become tough to freely express a personal opinion without having a bunch of snowflakes crystal-minded people feeling hurt coming at you with insults, calling you names, and even being reported on social media. So, I will do my best to be polite on this issue (women fighting under male rules) because I think it is a major concern to protect female boxers.
So, if you are easily triggered or hurt, you better stop reading the present article and leave. You have been adequately warned, so you won’t have any excuse to complain in any form if you continue reading the present article.
It is already accepted for boxers to take all the risks involved that can and will affect their health, quality of life, long-term health, and even mental health to be able to put food on their table and provide for their families. To now accept women take the same risks and physical damage to their bodies and minds.
It is a scientific fact that men are biologically built differently than women; it is also a fact that women are built differently than men. If you don’t believe it, then it is not my problem. If someone is allowed to believe that he is not what biologically is and to be allowed to be a thing that he is not, then why should you, who disagrees with my personal opinion, be able to force me to believe what you think is the only truth?
Are all women physically built the same way? Are all women physically capable of performing as well as Serrano and a tiny group of female boxers can? Are there studies to provide sufficient and reliable information to validly presume that this increase in round time duration and also the addition of two rounds is somewhere in the neighborhood of safe for women? Will this increase in duration increase marketability, and will it significantly impact their purses? Is this worth the all-around risks involved? Will you, as a boxing fan, accept to buy female fights because of the increase in the duration of rounds and the addition of rounds, or do you believe it was okay the way it was?
As the saying goes, ‘If it ain’t broken, then don’t fix it.’ Female boxing was good already. The hard truth is that there is little depth in the female boxing ranks. You can go by each weight division looking for talent, and you won’t find that much; only a few per weight division develop excellent boxing skills, and the rest go from average to below average speaking of boxing skills. As for heart, hunger, and determination, they deserve all my respect.
Amanda Serrano is a first-ballot choice for the IBHOF; she is the current WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO featherweight champion and is a former WBO super fly, WBO super light, WBO super bantam, WBO bantam, and also WBC – IBF super feather. Holds a record of 46 wins (30 KO), 2 losses, and 1 draw; title fights record of 16 wins, 2 losses, and no draws.
Danila Ramos would not have been allowed to fight for any world title if she was a man. She had only 12 wins (two wins against debutants), one win by knockout, no draws, and two losses (never ko´ed). Ramos had never fought against anyone near the boxing level Serrano has. Danila´s total 14 opponent record before she fought Serrano is way far from decent quality, having a total of 80 wins, 9 draws, and 62 losses. So, do you believe a man who held this record would have been allowed to fight against a Terence Crawford-caliber boxer?
The greedy promoters and the heartless TV CEOS don’t care for fighters’ well-being; it is enough to witness how boxers take all the risks and to see how the rats take all the revenues to now allow them to take advantage of female boxers.
In the last two rounds of the Serrano vs Ramos fight, you can see how helpless Danila looked. She was not only overmatched against Amanda, but she also lacked the experience and preparation to complete three-minute rounds at a twelve-title bout versus any other title holder, even less against a historic female boxer. This is how accidents happen, and it is quite easily preventable if, only if someone dares to do the right thing.
Most female boxers that I’ve seen fight have a heart even more prominent than many boxers men have. Many times, you can see how a limited boxing skill female boxer goes out there fighting on heart only, and that is not only unsafe, it is very unfair too.
The funny thing is to hear during the fight those same boxing analysts praising Ramos’ grit and resilience after taking a beating during the full fight, but those same payroll commentators always cry out loud for a fight to stop when in a men’s fight, the fight is uneven, and one boxer is taking a beating.
Serrano threw 1103 punches, connected 338, and landed 255 power punches. Ramos threw 846, connected 120, and landed only 63 power punches.
No one cared for Danila, not his manager who fed her to the lions, not the promoters, not the boxing commission, not the boxing organizations that sanctioned this mismatch, not the female referee or ringside doctor, and even less his corner. If you had had this historic first three-minute twelve-round fight take place when Serrano fought against Katie Taylor, it would have been okay, but not this way.
