American driver Logan Sargeant gets the results he needs for his F1 debut season with Williams
ABU DHABI — American racer Logan Sargeant has secure a spot on the Formula One grid with Williams next year after finishing fourth in the Formula 2 championship and getting enough points to be granted a super F1 license.
A super license is required to race in F1 and is earned through a points system, with finishes in various championships contributing points to a driver’s total score.
Williams has announced Sargeant, 21, as their choice to replace Nicholas Latifi next year in the US Grand Prix in October, but signing depends on Floridian having one.
By finishing fifth in the last F2 race of the year in Abu Dhabi, Sargeant secured fourth place in the F2 championship standings.
The results gave him an extra 30 points towards his super certificate, putting him comfortably past the 40-point threshold needed to qualify.
Sargeant, who finished as the top-ranked rookie in F2 this year, will team up with Alex Albon at Williams in 2023, making his debut at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix next March.
Alexander Rossi was the last American to race in F1 in 2015.
