We won’t blame you for assuming that Carrie Bradshaw is a fashion encyclopedia. Her love for clothes and shoes has been constant on the show Sex and the city, the next two movies and the reboot’And just like that… (AJLT)‘. So why is the character – brought to life by Actress Sarah Jessica Parker – now getting frustrated for her understanding of science?
Suppose that since Carrie has lived in Manhattan for many years, which has a large Indian community, in the recent episode of AJLT, when she widens her eyes and is confused after learning about the existence of the Diwali festival – which it calls the ‘festival of lights’ – which angers viewers.
She has a scene with her broker friend Seema in which the two go to a ‘saris shop in New York’s Soho to buy something for Diwali. But on the surface, it’s a store filled with lehengas and other Indian national costumes.
Interestingly, while the word ‘lehenga“never really uttered, Carrie ended up just buying that – in fact, number of Falguni Shane Peacock. The photos flooded social media before, and are being re-shared; watch.
While there is nothing wrong with the looks, what stands out is perhaps the fact that for a character with a deep understanding of fashion and little understanding of Indian festivals, the floral details on the head Hers is a bit too much (not such a dress for Diwali).
Before that, we hadn’t actually seen Parker’s Bradshaw interact with a brown person. So when she asked the question “cultural appropriation” – a hot topic in the West – Seema explains that it is “cultural appreciation” because she was invited to an Indian performance and had to wear ethnic clothing.
Hollywood always accused of tokenism – which is when you put a person of color in a scene or a story just to show ‘diversity’ and ‘saneness’, without giving them anything meaningful to do or simply is to stereotype them.
This saris–lehenga Failure happens like that. We wish Bradshaw knew her Indian clothes, she saris from her lehenga, and actually opted for a Diwali look for himself, without any of that appropriation/appreciation narrative.
