The Anne Frank Foundation paid tribute to Pick-Goslar, who was mentioned in Anne’s World Famous Diary about her life in hiding from the Netherlands’ Nazi occupiers, for helping to keep Anne’s memory alive with stories of their youth.
“Hannah Pick-Goslar means so much to the Anne Frank House and we can always call on her,” the foundation said in a statement. It did not give details or the cause of her death.
Pick-Goslar grew up with Anne in Amsterdam after both of their families moved there from Germany as Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party come to power. The friends were separated when Anne’s family went into hiding in 1942 but met again briefly in February 1945, at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany, shortly before Anne died of typhus. ban.
Before World War II, their family lived next to each other in Amsterdam, and Anne and Hannah went to school together.
Pick-Goslar recalls attending her friend’s 13th birthday party and seeing a red and white checkered diary that Anne’s parents gave their daughter as a gift. Anne continues to fill it with her thoughts and frustrations while hiding from the Nazis in a secret outbuilding in Amsterdam. Anne’s father, Otto, published the diary after the war.
Pick-Goslar recounted their friendship in a book by Alison Leslie Gold called “Memories of Anne Frank; Reflections of a childhood friend. The book that was made into a movie, released last year, is titled “My Best Friend, Anne Frank.”
In a 1998 interview with the Associated Press, she said of Anne: “Nowadays, everyone thinks she’s a saint. But this is not the case at all.”
Pick-Goslar said: “She was a girl who wrote beautifully and grew up quickly under unusual circumstances.
Pick-Goslar is mentioned in the diary, referred to by what Anne calls her: Hanneli.
On June 14, 1942, Anne wrote: “Hanneli and Sanne used to be my two best friends. People who see us together always say, “Anne, Hanne and Sanne are gone.”
The Anne Frank Foundation said Pick-Goslar “shared her memories of their friendship and the Holocaust in her old age. She believes everyone should know what happened to her and her friend Anne after the last diary entry. No matter how terrible the story is.”
Pick-Goslar last saw his friend in early February 1945, about a month before Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen and two months before the Allies liberated the camp.
They were held in different areas, separated by a high barbed wire fence. Occasionally, they approached the fence to talk to each other.
“I have no one,” Anne once told her friend, crying.
At the time, the Nazis cut short Anne’s dark locks. “She always likes to play with her hair,” Pick-Goslar told AP. “I remember her curling her hair with her fingers. It must have killed her.”
Pick-Goslar emigrated in 1947 to Israel, where she became a nurse, married, and had three children. Her family is large, including 11 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
She once said of her large family: “This is my answer to Hitler,” said the Anne Frank Foundation.
