Artists get ready for the annual Apsley Autumn Studio Tour – Peterborough
The Visit Apsley Fall Studio is back, running September 17 and 18 in Apsley, Ont.
Artist and tour founder, Molly Moldovan, says it’s an opportunity to explore the countryside, while learning behind the scenes about art studios in the area.
“This year we have 12 venues and 29 different artists, there are several guest artists in each location,” Moldova said.
“There are glass artisans, both stained glass and blown glass. There are jewelers. We have three yarn artists this year”.

The tour started back in 1994. Moldova, who mainly works in acrylic paint, said it was initially to give her something to work with. Now, she said, more than 400 people are expected to come to the studio over the weekend.
“We want to engage with the public and talk about our work and this is a prime opportunity for people who have always wanted to ask questions about how works are made, why works are created and whatever. different about art in general,” she said.
No need to worry about getting lost. This year you can map your route on Toureka! application. It allows you to see participating artists, browse photos, and choose your must-sees. The app will then map the route for you.
Our next stop is Tallan Creek Potter to visit the owner, Cathy Pennaertz. She says she’s stopped on the tour for 16 years now and loves watching people enjoy the day – and her job.
She also said that he loves hearing stories like these:
“People will say, ‘I was thinking of you this morning as I drank from your cup,’ and I think that’s great,” Pennaertz said.
From paint to pottery to glass, it’s our next stop. Glass artist Brad Copping will be performing glassblowing all weekend at ‘Studio F’ on the touring map, where five artists will be stationed for the weekend.

“The kiln, when it was in operation, was at around 2150 F,” Copping said, adding that a studio tour is often the unofficial start of the glassblowing season. (He says they make the cold glass work when it’s hot and burn the hot shop during the colder months).
Glass artist Susan Rankin will also be at the venue. She just finished shipping an installation to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. Now, she has similar sculptures on display for the studio tour.
“The columns are made from nature, for nature,” says Rankin. “They’re great for any season, in the winter, the snow covers every level.”
She added Vivienne Jones, a jeweler, Dave Smith, a painter and Rusty Girl, a metal sculptor will also be on site.
