At the end of 2019, terrible forest fires ripping off eastern Australia, destroying 35 million hectares (86.5 million acres) of land, displacing tens of thousands of people and destroying nearly 3,000 homes.
More than two years later, the communities hardest hit by Fire is still struggling to get on his feet, constrained by bureaucracy, soaring construction material prices and a lack of skilled construction workers.
Laura Gillies, a resident of Quaama in southern New South Wales (NSW), with her husband and two children, wants her new home to be made of mud bricks, so the process is slower, but she says many Her neighbor is having trouble even building an ordinary house.
Many are still “living in shipping containers and trucks and things like that,” she said, unable to even begin.
Part of the problem is that there aren’t enough builders and other construction professionals to meet the demand.
“You have to wait… at least six months to get something done,” Gillies said. “…They have too much to do so it’s a juggling act trying to make everyone happy.”
Her boss just started rebuilding the shacks they had their original offices in. At the beginning of the year, too much rain held them back. Now, they are having a hard time arranging employees to stay on the job.
“Say that the plumbing needs to be finished to [electrician] could come… but then the digging could not be completed because of the rain and the electrician [says]”Well, I’ll push you back on my list and I’ll do other people’s things,” she said. “Then, when the last mining is done… instead of you being next on the list… you are… falling 10th.”
Mallacoota-based carpenter Farrell Spence-Henderson knows this all too well.
He has backup work, he said, and “they are giving some [tradespeople] as far away as Melbourne” 515 km away.
“Everybody has so much work, they can’t keep up,” he said. “[They] have to rely on outside help”.
‘Lost money’
Rebuilding efforts have also been slowed by shortages of building materials, including steel, and rising prices.
“[It’s] Spence-Henderson said. “It changed the demographics of all prices and all materials because people cut each other down. It just gets harder and harder. ”
The relationship between China and Australia has get worse on a number of issues, from Canberra’s request for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic to concerns about foreign influence campaigns and the detention of Australian nationals in China. Country.

While there are hopes of improvement under the new Labor government, there have not been any major changes yet.
According to Spence-Henderson, there’s also been plenty of red tape for people to navigate, even if they can’t find a mason to work on their build.

“Plans and permits will take a long time to complete,” he explains. “Everybody was pushed back. There is no rush. It’s really hard for everyone. ”
Building requirements have changed since the bushfires because BAL Rating, a standard for measuring a home’s fire exposure risk, has become more stringent. The high number of license applicants also creates a backlog.
Meanwhile, an increasing number of rental properties are available to locals to live in while they rebuild, partly as a result of a booming second home market.
“Many people from the city bought all the homes so there wasn’t much left to sell, and everything turned into vacation homes,” Spence-Henderson said. “Nothing for residents.”
Spence-Henderson herself couldn’t afford to rent and was staying at a friend’s house.
“He burned down his house so he has a mobile home,” he says, explaining that “mobile” is “a house on a steel frame.” [that] They take it down to a truck and then just move it into place and put it back together.”
According to him, mobile homes are popular in Mallacoota.
“It’s the fastest and cheapest way to get the roof back on your head,” he says. “It just depends on how many people you have, whether you can have one or two bedrooms… if you don’t have enough people you are only allowed to have one bedroom.”
‘Another home’
Many residents are also grappling with the emotional scars of what happened during and after the fire.
Firefighter Dave Rudendyke was on the front lines in Cobargo, southern New South Wales when the fire broke out in late 2019.
“The beep sounded… a little after midnight on New Year’s Eve. So I jumped into the fire pit,” he said.
Firefighters went to Wandella, he said, evacuating residents and sending them back to him at the fire depot.
“I cooked whatever I could find, put the kettle on and that sort of thing,” he said. “… I just recorded who they were and where they came from.”
The next morning, the sky was a dark red and the air was thick with smoke, he said.
“We lost a lot,” he continued. “While I was downstairs fighting the fire, I heard that an area close to where we live was growing. So I sent my son up to check out the house and he was very close to our house.
“My boy Jay tried to put out the fire with my small 1,000 liter fire extinguisher. But it overwhelmed him very quickly,” Rudendyke said.
Rudendyke’s wife Barb says she hasn’t felt the same way since.
“Before the fire, I felt younger, stronger and happier,” she said, “and I don’t know, I feel like I’ve aged or something. I feel older.”
Rudendykes acted quickly and was able to rebuild by the end of 2020. “We were among the first to be back… in a house,” she said.
Her new home, although “lovely”, doesn’t feel the same way.
“You don’t care deeply about things anymore: about the house, about the garden or things like that,” she said, “They don’t mean as much to me as they used to. It’s my home, but it’s a different house.”
“If you want to go back to your other life, you need to go back to the other house and It’s not there.”
Gillies said her mental health took a hit at the end of 2021.
“I couldn’t do anything,” she said, “I was doing too much and I was so tired and exhausted. But… I don’t know if it’s from COVID… It’s hard to say, it’s hard to separate it. ”
However, she is confident that she will make it through.
“Perhaps there’s still trauma that needs to be worked out, and it’s slow… it’s like any kind of grief will happen. [fade] Slowly.”
Barb Rudendyke is less optimistic. She doesn’t think she’ll ever go back to the way she was before the fire.
“The hill behind us was just a small hill of… bone trees. That’s what we see from our back window,” she said, adding that it’s a constant reminder of how important what’s happened to their community.
“If I go to the top of the hill, there will be another hill and another hill,” she said. “It’s all the same.”
