Australia’s best-selling electric car in the first half of 2022
The Tesla Model 3 remains the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, but the lockdowns in Shanghai caused deliveries to drop in the second quarter of 2022.
The electric-car maker delivered just 236 Model 3s throughout April, May and June, but deliveries to date of 4653 units (as of July 1, 2022) remain the most powerful model. than any EV.
Its sales account for almost half (48%) of all Australian electric vehicle sales so far in 2022. Overall, 9680 EVs have been delivered to customers this year, or 1.8% of the total. market.
With its trio of electric vehicle models, Hyundai is the second strongest electric vehicle brand in Australia so far in 2022 with sales of 1276 units.
Kona Electric (570) leads the charge, followed by the soon-to-be discontinued Ioniq EV (385) and the limited supply Ioniq 5 (321).
It is followed by Mercedes-Benz (708) with SUV models EQA (443) and EQC (257). EQS (8) limousine has also arrived in Australia.
Polestar is limited in supply, but has provided 562 examples of its only vehicle, the Polestar 2. That puts it ahead of BMW and sales of 528 units, divided by iX3 SUVs (237). and iX (155) and i4 (133) lift back.
Volvo is next in its single line of 505 EVs (now), XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. Kia came in next with sales of 421 EV6s (294) and Niro EV (127) which were limited in supply.
Porsche follows with 307 Taycan deliveries, ahead of Nissan (226 Leaf deliveries) and MG (137 ZS EV deliveries). Last year, MG ranked second in the market but was stuck with no supply due to waiting for the upcoming updated MG ZS EVs.

Audi (67), Lexus (47), Renault (24), Genesis (14) and Jaguar (10) have overtaken the EV sales race.
More broadly, electric car sales in Australia will account for 1.8% of the new car market by 2022. Toyota-style hybrids account for 7.6% and hybrids only 0.54% of new car sales.
Tesla only started reporting sales data to VFACTS in 2022, so comparing electric vehicle sales to the same point in 2021 is a futile exercise.
However, sales of non-Tesla electric cars increased from 2217 in mid-2021, to 5027 in mid-2022.
