An Australian startup called Going abroad created a shared mobile app for all-inclusive Tesla electric car rentals by the hour – starting with guests at a Gold Coast hotel.
In doing so, it claims to be “electrifying Australian tourism”.
In short, Outbound wants to install Tesla Model 3s (and there are plans to include other electric vehicles) with chargers at the hotel, for guests to use as swimming pool or gym or any other amenities.
The Queensland company has cut a contract with a Mantra hotel in Southport, parking a Model 3 on site as a pilot.
“This is a really exciting development for the Australian tourism industry,” said Outbound CEO Luke Rust.
“The app is really easy to use – guests just need to check in, book a car and unlock it with their phone. It is really useful for anyone who wants to take a day trip, such as going to the amusement parks or going out. [the] inland.

At $30 per hour including insurance and electricity, in some cases, an app-based car-sharing program can actually work cheaper than hiring an Uber.
Mr. Rust said he was in discussions to roll out the scheme at other hotels on the Gold Coast, as well as in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
This type of carpooling differs from traditional carpooling because instead of private vehicle owners renting their personal cars, the vehicle is attached to an asset and available for shared use, for only for those who are staying there.
Outbound also marks the potential to attract guests in residential and commercial buildings, where owners and renters can gain access to one or several EVs and reduce their reliance on private vehicle ownership. core.
