BAE Systems to produce hundreds of arctic troop carriers for Sweden, Germany, UK
BAE Systems has announced that Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom have reached an agreement with the company to purchase 436 BvS10 all-terrain vehicles.
The joint procurement, valued at $760 million, is intended to support Arctic operations for the Collaborative Off-Road Vehicle (CATV) program.

The three-country acquisition will provide 436 vehicles starting in 2024, with 236 BvS10s to be delivered to the Swedish Defense Supplies Administration (FMV), 140 to the German Federal Ministry of Defense ( BAAINBw) and 60 for the UK Department of Defense (Department of Education). These vehicles are based on the latest version of BvS10 currently operated by Sweden and will include variants for troop transport, logistics, medical evacuation, recovery and command and control.
The CATV program includes a framework agreement that could lead to the three countries buying more vehicles, keeping the BvS10, the world’s leading off-road vehicle, in production for years to come. Sweden is a leader and has established a joint procurement office to lead the effort with representatives from all three countries.
This acquisition follows a Swedish order last year to add 127 BvS10 all-terrain vehicles to their existing fleet. In parallel with this agreement, Sweden is also purchasing 40 more BvS10s in a separate contract worth about 50 million USD.
BvS10 and Beowulf lead the world in all-terrain solutions. Their articulated mobility system provides optimum maneuverability over various terrains so they can traverse snow, ice, rock, sand, mud or swamps as well as steep mountain environments. The vehicle’s wading feature also allows them to swim in wetlands or coastal waters. These vehicles can transport personnel and supplies to maintain strategic, tactical and operational mobility.
The unmatched mobility of the BvS10 based on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standards can access terrain. Its modular design allows it to be reconfigured for different missions and can be delivered in multiple variants including manning, command and control, ambulance, repair and recovery. vehicles, logistical support, situational awareness, and weapons carriers with additional mortar capabilities.
BvS10 is currently operated by Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom. BAE Systems’ Beowulf, the non-armored variant of the BvS10, won the US Army’s competition for the Cold Weather Vehicle (CATV) program in August. The US Army will receive 110 vehicle for a period of 5 years.
