Banksy carved art on the wall in Lowestoft so it could be sold in America for millions | UK News
A building owner in Lowestoft removed a portion of the wall featuring the original Banksy mural.
Over the weekend, workers came to carve the artwork, which is expected to sell for millions in the US.
The work, which depicts a child building a sandcastle using a crowbar, was one of 10 created in the area during the summer. Great British Spraycation.
Once removed, the wall panels are loaded onto a truck and taken to a hidden location, ready to be shipped to the US.
Locals in Lowestoft were disappointed by the move, having previously hoped the artwork would attract more visitors.
The old shop had previously sold for £300,000, but was re-listed for £500,000 after adding graffiti.
Professor of Political Arts at the Royal College of Arts, Peter Kennard, who has worked with Banksy in the past, told Sky News: “It’s the extreme of capitalism. Someone does something. to the public, it’s been scrapped for money. It’s immoral, but a lot of buying and selling in the art world is immoral.”
“For someone to take it down is disgusting – it goes against the ethos of what Banksy is doing.”
Professor Kennard, who recently created his own street art exhibition in Glasgow for COP26, said: “As public spaces become more privatized, artists using walls are a great way to communicate with the public and young people, and without being stigmatized. being in an art gallery.”
It is not known if the work will be auctioned or sold privately, but either way is sure to fetch a high price, with Banksy’s Love Is In The Bin. sold for £18.5m last month.
