Barcelona thrash Real Madrid: Record crowd watches Women’s Champions League match
The largest attendance ever to watch a women’s soccer match, and Barcelona certainly made the most of the home team’s support.
Having held the advantage of taking a 2-goal lead from the first leg last week, the home team rose to victory with a 5-2 victory over rival Madrid to win tickets to the semi-finals.
“Fans [are] They didn’t leave home, they just stayed to celebrate with us. I couldn’t imagine anything like it and everyone got goosebumps,” Barca forward Caroline Graham Hansen told reporters after the game.
“They sang in all the games and it was amazing. It was something I never dreamed would happen and today we did it. Hopefully it won’t be the last. We do this.”
The new attendance record breaks the previous record for a women’s club football match, set in 2019 when 60,739 spectators watched Atletico Madrid take on Barcelona at their home stadium, the Metropolitano.
Wednesday’s participation in El Clásico also broke the overall record for any women’s match, of 90,195.
It was the year 1999 when the US beat China in the Women’s World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
‘You love watching it’
The new record was welcomed by the stars of the female game.
Playing in front of record backing, Barcelona put on a performance to beat their fiercest opponents.
Taking a 2-1 lead at the start of the second half, the home team scored three lightning goals in 10 minutes to equalize.
With a final 8-3 victory, the defending European champions advanced to the semi-finals for the fifth time in six years.
It will face Arsenal or Wolfsburg for a place in the final.
“I’m speechless. It’s a dream come true. All I can answer is work more, play better and win so we can give them a big spectacle.” , said Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, one of the scorers that night.
“I’ve seen a lot of girls, kids with that look. It’s great to be a part of history.”
